"What troubles thee my beautiful fair damsel?" he turned around to face me when we reached the corner near the buffet tables. "Who is the cause of thy soliloquy?"
"This is not the proper time to play Romeo and Juliet with me so cut the medieval manner," I rolled my eyes. "I would appreciate some modernity. This ball stuff is suffocating me."
"Okay, let me rephrase that. Which punk in this room am I gonna punch tonight for upsetting you?"
I smiled. "Before I ruin the mood, let me just say that you look really amazing tonight and- "
"Cheshire. The problem."
"Right so um," I stammered. "First were the roses. Right after you left I saw the bouquet in my bed when I went inside my room and it freaked me out."
It took him a moment to take it all in and I knew he was knitting his eyebrows through his mask when he said, "How is that possible?"
"I wouldn't be freaking out if I knew!"
"And that's not all?"
"Cassandra told me Nathan can't come when I asked her, but he showed up. He appeared to me just to warn me that my life is in danger. He wants me to leave the mansion and he wouldn't even tell me why."
"That is odd," he agreed. "Where is he now?"
"That's the next odd thing. He just disappeared when Alex showed up. I swear I'm going totally insane if I'm having these weird illusions," I said frantically.
He grew silent for a moment and shook his head as if in disbelief. "You think so?"
"You okay?" I stroked his right shoulder. "I know it's hard to believe, right after what happened in the beach but-"
"I had a dream," he suddenly said.
"What?"
"No, it was a nightmare. I don't know if it counts but you were in it."
"How come me being in a dream count as a nightmare?" I asked.
"No, it's not you, it's what was taking you."
"You lost me there," I frowned. I don't know if what he said was either confusing or scary. Probably both.
"I did," he replied grimly.
"I don't get you," I rephrased.
"In my nightmare, someone took you. I was reaching out for you when shadows appeared and dragged you away from me."
"Shadows." I repeated. Coincidence or some intended dirty scheme? "When was this?"
"Last night. Why?"
"Call me crazy but I had the same dream, but there were two versions of it. The first was a vision from this masquerade, the other was a shadow. You were at the ball, standing like a statue and -," I trailed off. "Look, I don't think the first one mattered, it was a hazy dream and it was too complicated."
"You can't just dismiss that first one. If I was in your dream, I need to hear what happened," he pushed with mischief and just like that, he was back to his former cheery self.
"It was too far-fetched. Trust me," I set aside the thought.
"Whatever these dreams are, sooner or later we still have to confront your parents about what happened at the beach and set security all over the place." I find his concern for me, rather cute.
"It wouldn't matter Damien," I shook my head. Would it?
"We need to take precautions. If Nathan advised you to leave, then there must be something wrong. We won't just let bad things happen because they are far-fetched."
