Chapter Four
"Lauren, could you come with me for a second?" Mom asked me when she walked in my room. I just got ready for the day and brushed my hair. I narrowed my eyes.
"What's wrong?" I asked. I couldn't imagine the last time my Mom said that to me.
"Please, just come with me."
"Am I in trouble?"
Mom shook her head. "Not really" Okay, then I was scared. I followed my Mom downstairs and saw not only Dad sitting in the living room but also Lisa. Great. This day couldn't start any better.
Mom made me sit down next to Lisa on the couch while she went over to the armchair where Dad was sitting. She sat down on one of the armrests.
"I guess you already know why both of you are here" Mom started. I crossed my arms.
"Not really." I answered.
"I'm sure you do. So it can't stay like this. It's important that things get back to how it was before." Dad smiled at us.
"But they already are, Dad. Everything is fine."
Mom looked at me disbelieving what I just said.
"You know that that's not true."
"Listen. We are fine. Everything is okay. You don't need to care about it. Can I go now?"
"Do you think we're stupid, Lauren? We know that you are not okay as much as you know it. And we realize how you ignore your sister ever since."
"Dad, that's okay" Lisa said but Dad didn't listen.
"It's not, Lisa. As kids you were always together. You loved each other and cared for each other like I don't know any other person. And now? It's like you don't know each other anymore."
"Maybe we just grew up" I said clearly mad that I had to sit there and talk to my parents.
"Oh yes. You are acting really mature."
I rolled my eyes. Why couldn't they just leave me alone?
"We just want you to keep that bond between you two. Because that's important."
"So what do you want us to do? Do you expect us to hug and then everything is fine?" I asked.
"No. But we made plans. Tomorrow both of you will go to the movies together and after that you will go eat something."
"What?" I asked. Mom and Dad nodded and I turned around to face Lisa.
"This was your idea, right? Why do you want me to suffer even more?" I asked her.
Lisa looked down and played with her shirt.
"No, it wasn't her idea. It was ours."
"I hate that! I hate that idea!"
"And it's okay if you do. But there will be a time when you will thank us."
I got up from the couch and walked to the stairs.
"Lauren", Mom said and so I turned around. She had tears in her eyes that I didn't understand.
"Remember that day you fell off your skateboard? You were eight or something and when you didn't come home Lisa knew exactly where you were because you two knew each other so well? She carried you home and you were so thankful that you bought her this huge ice cream even though you didn't have that much money?"
"That was in the past, Mom."
"And that's what we want for your future."
I rolled my eyes and walked up the stairs.
"Tomorrow. You'll leave the house at six" Mom said and as an answer I just slammed my door behind me. Maybe I acted like a defiant kid but I had my reasons. And Mom and Dad had no right to demand that. I was just mad and frustrated because I didn't want to spend an evening with her. It was hard enough to see her every morning. Because she reminded me of everything that I didn't want to be reminded of.
"Hey Lauren", Dani said. She was reading a book for school but looked at me when I entered the room.
"Maybe that's a good idea. Don't you think?"
"No! It's not! I hate that idea! I want to spend my Friday night differently."
"You do? With what?"
I wanted to tell her my plans with my friends or with something. But I couldn't think about a single thing to do. Maybe pushing everyone away from me wasn't the best idea. But they deserved it.
"See?", Dani said. And that made me so mad. Isighed dramatically, put on my headphones and turned up the music really loudso I could be somewhere else. So I didn't hear anything around me. So I didn't haveto be Lauren for a moment.
