"Whatcha wanna talk about?" Abigail asked as light snow started to fall. Dalton took a deep breath. "First off, I appreciate you being here for me. When Carson was killed." He said. Abigail nodded with a smile. "Of course." She said. "And it got me thinking..." Dalton said. He closed his eyes and took another breath.
He looked at the snow. "This is nice." He said. Abigail's heart started beating quicker. "I think so too." She said. He looked at her and smiled. "Look, Abigail..." He said. "Dalton... is there somethin' ya wanna tell me?" She asked. He looked at her. "Abigail..." She looked at him. Right in the eye. Then... Dalton made his move. He kissed her.
Her eyes widen as the moment happened. Her heartbeat was speeding. She failed to suppress a smile. "What are you smiling about?" Dalton asked. "I'm just... really happy." She said. Dalton smiled. "I assume it was killing you?" She nodded, wrapping her arms around him. "I really wanted to tell ya, but I just couldn't." She said. "Someone had to." He said. She squeezed her arms tighter, making him say, "Okay, its getting hard to breathe." "Too bad." Abigail said. She looked at him and kissed him again. But over his shoulder, Abigail caught sight of her sister.
Kendra.
The look on her older sisters face. The look of pure sadness and heartbreak. "Oh shit." Abigail muttered. "What?" Dalton questioned. He looked over his shoulder and seen Kendra. He immediately tensed up.
Kendra clenched her fists tightly. Her face scrunched up in anger. She started walking over to them. Kendra's teeth clenched together as she neared them.
"Ken', Kendra, listen to me." Abigail tried to say. "Stay the fuck away from my sister!" Kendra demanded as she gripped Abigail's arm tightly. "Kendra, I didn't mean-" "Shut the fuck up Dalton!" Kendra said to him. He frowned and lowered his head.
"C'mon. Let's go." Kendra said to Abigail. "No." Abigail said. Kendra quickly spun around. Her bangs hanging in her eyes. "Abigail. Now!" Abigail crossed her arms. "I'm sorry Ken... but no." Dalton walked beside Abigail. "Just accept that ya don't need to watch over me anymore. I can take care of myself." Abigail said. "But, mom said-" "I know what mom said." Abigail said, interrupting her sister.
"She wanted you to protect me. To watch over me. And that's what you've been doin' for the past few years, and Kendra, I love you for it." Abigail sighed. "But, ya gotta let me do things. 'Cause ya see?" Abigail laced her fingers through Dalton's. "Dalton is a good friend. The day I met 'em, I knew I liked 'em. And when Carson died, I was there for him. And I always will be if he needs someone to talk to." A tear slipped from Kendra's eye. "I just don't want-" "I don't care." Abigail interrupted again. "Dalton means a lot to me. Just accept it." Abigail said.
"Abigail, I-"
"Shut up, Dalton!" Abigail interrupted.
Kendra looked into her younger sisters eyes. She just wasn't ready to let her go just yet. And it broke her heart to see that her baby sister was all grown up now.
Kendra turned and walked away, hanging her head.
Abigail watched her sister walk away with a scowl. But slowly, started to frown. Realizing her words were harsher than she intended. She felt a hand press against her shoulder. "You okay?" Abigail shook her head. "I didn't mean to say those things." She said. "You didn't mean it. That's what matters." He said. Abigail nodded.
She looked at him with tears in her eyes. She wrapped her arms around him and buried her face into his shoulder. Dalton rubbed her back as she started to sob in his shoulder. She was there for him. He wanted to be there for her. "She'll okay." He told her. "She just needs time to think it through. We'll talk to her later. Okay?" Abigail nodded. She lifted her head from his shoulder and wiped her tears away.
"Let's go by the fire." He said. Abigail nodded and the two walked over to the fire where Kyle, Katey and Clementine were talking.
"Hey, guys." Kyle greeted. "Everything alright?" Clementine asked with a soft expression. "Just a little argument." Dalton said. "Well, I got a story to cheer everyone up." Kyle said and cleared his throat. "You see, in my class, we had this thing called "class helpers"." Everyone nodded. "So one day, the teacher grabbed something that was on the floor, with his head blocking the C-L, so it said "ass helpers"."
Everyone nodded, waiting for the punchline. But little did they know, that was the joke.
He looked around at everyone, nodding at them. "Okay?" Clementine muttered with her eyebrow raised. "Is that it?" Katey said. "Y-yeah. Guess it wouldn't be as funny as I thought." Kyle muttered and looked at the fire, feeling a little embarrassed that his joke failed.
