“No. Nope. Not happening” I said as Kane and walked down the hall, “Oh come on, and you’re like really good friends with her. Please do this for me” he begged, giving me the puppy dog eyes, I just rolled my eyes and laughed at him. “You owe me” I said as I slammed my locker shut “Take this and meet me by the car” I shoved my bag at him, he hugged me and ran off down the hall. I stopped outside the classroom and then knocked on the door, walking in. “Alexis, how may I help you?” the teacher smiled at me, “Hey Mr Charles, I was wondering if I could please borrow Tiffany for a while, it’s really important. I’ll bring her back in like 10 minutes” I smiled, he nodded and I motioned for Tiffany to follow me out. “What’s up?” she smiled, “just follow me” I smiled back, I stopped a few feet from the car and saw Kane and pushed her towards him, smiling. “Hey” Ryan smiled as he nudged me with his shoulder, “what’s going on over there?” he nodded towards Kane and Tiffany. “Kane’s asking Tiffany out. He begged me to get her out of class for him so he could. And now he owes me one” I smiled at him. We looked back and saw Tiffany kiss Kane on the cheek and then walked back to class with a huge smile on her face, waving at me as she walked past, I smiled at her and looked back at Kane who was doing a happy dance. We walked over to him. “Well?” I asked, he just smiled and pulled me in for a hug, “I’ll take that as she said yes” I laughed, he nodded and continued his happy dance, causing Ryan and I to laugh. “You owe me so big” I punched Kane softly, he just nodded. “Good for you mate” Ryan said and he slapped him on the back, “Kane and Tiffany sitting in a tree K-i-s-s-i-n-g” I teased, “First comes love, then comes marriage then comes the baby in the baby carriage” Ryan continued, “Woah, woah, woah. We’re only just going on a date. Ain’t no babies involved” Kane said, causing Ryan and I to chuckle. “Really Kane, you asked Tiffany out, you disgust me” Ashley gagged as she joined us followed by Michael. “What’s wrong with Tiff?” I asked looking at her confused. “She’s nothing but trouble. She’s so weird and into all that punk rock crap” she rolled her eyes, Michael let go of her hand and stood beside me, “We like that punk rock crap” He gestured to both of us, “I know but I mean, she uh, she likes weird art stuff” she stuttered, “I like that weird art stuff. That’s why I like her” Kane said standing up, “Wanna insult anyone else?” I crossed my arms looking at her, she looked between us, trying to find something to say “She stole my last boyfriend okay” she yelled, defeat in her voice, I uncrossed my arms and took a step closer to her, “I didn’t break up with Romeo because I didn’t like him anymore. He broke up with me for Tiffany” She sighed in defeat, I pulled her in for a hug, followed by everyone else. “I’m still going out with her” Kane said, causing us to laugh. “Yeah, I figured, just be careful. I’ll beat her up if she hurts you” she said pulling him in for a hug. “Ditto” I smiled at him. The bell rang and we all went our separate ways. When school was over I had a meeting with the prom committee, which I didn’t understand why we were having them so early, it wasn’t even summer yet. I was walking the empty hallways when I heard some yelling, I walked to find where it was coming from. I saw Sean, the school bully, holding up a smaller kid against a locker. “Hey” I yelled at him walking closer, he dropped the kid and he fell to the ground. “You alright?” I asked as I helped up the boy, he nodded, tears running down his face, I stood between him and Sean. “Well, well, well if it isn’t madam president” he said, fake bowing. I rolled my eyes. “What the hell Sean, I warned you about beating up kids, especially the younger ones” I hissed at him. Everyone in this school was afraid of him, but not me. I’d known him since he was little, nothing made me afraid of him. “Stay out of it Alex” he hissed at me, stepping closer. I felt the boy shaking behind me and I heard him gasp, but I stood my ground. “Get out of here Sean. Before you or I do something we’ll regret” I hissed at him, he stepped closer again, our faces only inches apart, he slapped me, right across the face. I barely flinched, looking at him, anger inside me growing. “Hey” someone yelled from the left “You leave her and the Kid alone or else” they yelled again, Sean looked towards the voice and his eyes filled with fear. He ran off into the other direction, I looked for the face of the voice, Smiling. “You know, you’ve gotta stop getting yourself in trouble” Ashton joked as he walked closer, “What can I say, I’m just a preppy misfit” I smiled, looking at the kid. “You alright?” I smiled at him, he nodded, tears still running down his face, I wiped them away. “Is someone here to pick you up? Do you need a ride home?” I asked, “My mum is waiting for me” he whispered, shaking his head. “We’ll walk you out” Ashton smiled. I helped pick up his stuff and we walked him out, his mother looked at her son with both sadness and shock. “What happened?” she asked looking at me with concern. “An older kid was just harassing him, but I don’t think he’ll touch him again. We took care of it” I smiled at Ashton. “Thank you” She smiled at me, she got in the car. “Thank you” the boy smiled as he wound down his window. “Anytime, seriously. If anyone else bothers you just come to me” I smiled and waved as they drove off. “What are you even doing here” I poked Ashton lightly in the stomach. “Band practise” he smiled, pulling me in for a kiss. “Meet you at mine?” I smiled at him, he nodded. “Race ya” I winked and pushed him back a little, running off to my car and jumping in. I laughed as I drove off and he was fumbling with his keys. “Winner” I cheered as he walked in the front door, shaking his head he tackled me to the couch and started tickling me ending in an all-out tickle war. We both sat there trying to regain our breath once it finished. “Why was Sean afraid of you?” I asked through breaths. “What do you mean?” he looked at me confused. “Well when you yelled at him today, when he saw it was you, he had fear in his eyes, he genuinely looked afraid and nothing scares him. So why is he scared of you?” I asked, he furrowed his eyebrows in annoyance before looking back at me. “I didn’t think I would have to talk about this again. But here goes nothing” he sighed, “He beat up my little brother for about two years. Even when I went to school, my brother didn’t tell me so I had no idea why he kept coming home with cuts and bruises and black eyes. I was getting worried, as were my parents. So I followed him one day after school and I saw it. My brother didn’t even flinch or react to it, it’s like he was dead inside. I walked over to him and pulled my little brother away from Sean. I told Sean that if he ever touch my little brother again I would find him and do something I’ll probably regret. I told my brother to wait in the car and then I...” he stopped, his voice trembling, I grabbed his hand in reassurance, and he just shook his head. “You beat him up, didn’t you?” I finished for him. He looked at me, sorrow, pain, regret and fear filled his eyes as he slowly nodded. “It’s okay. He deserved it” I half smiled at him, “Just, don’t do it again. Okay?” He smiled and pulled me in for a hug. “Okay”
