I stood still, and put a thin almost film of death essence around me. I saw a laser point past my shoulder, but I kept walking. I made it back to Rachel's room and only saw one life sign, thank god. I walked slightly further down and saw there were two in Gwen's room. I slowly eased the handle open, making sure not to make a sound, then the other life form turned and I burst through the door, but instead of grabbing an activist, I grabbed Andrew by the throat, and held my hand teeming with death a few inches away from his face. He told me to communicate telepathically, and so I did.
Andrew, what the-
Shhhh... you'll wake up the traitor. He pointed to Gwen.
How is she the traitor? Is she still breathing? I went and checked her pulse, her heart was still beating.
She's breathing, I caught her on her phone with one of the activists.
The head guy?
I would've assumed. They're here because she called them.
I stood away from her, and put my ear to the door. Act natural. Whisper.
We walked out of the door, and started whispering to each other.
"So, how long will she be asleep?"
"A few hours at least. She was moving in her sleep and all, figured I should help her sleep"
"Yeah. You know, being an air controller helps me. I've always wanted to be a bird biologist, and guess what I've found out?"
"What did you find?"
"The sparrow flies south for winter."
We both launched forward, brushing past each other. I put up a field and threw it at a few of the soldiers. He made some kind of cannon and knocked three into a wall, knocking them out. I looked back at him.
"Skulduggery Pleasant reference?"
"Had to squeeze it in somewhere."
Alarms went off. We both broke into a run. Two of the activists fell in front of us, riding on wires. I kicked one of them back, grabbing the wire and holding it out for Andrew to cut. He spun around with a blade of air, along with the other activists wire. I pulled them both together and Andrew launched me up, pulling them both together and slamming their heads together. They both fell unconscious.
"Thank you."
"Don't mention it, Chris."
"The others."
We continued running. We rounded a corner and saw them all, on their knees, with guns to their heads. Mary and Fred had their necklaces in small cases next to them, so they couldn't use their diamonds. Everyone else had ditanium gloves on. The guy with blonde hair looked proud.
"So. Are you gonna surrender now."
"It took you cheating to even come close to a victory, so I consider this all a win for us."
"Surrender."
"You've got guns to almost all my friends, so sure."
"Finally."
They slipped the gloves over my hands and forced me onto my knees. The guy in charge sat between me and the rest of them.
"You know, the diamonds were put into people, to save humanity. After humanity was saved, the diamonds turned against us. Scientists, wanted to make society again. But then, the original air diamond turned on everyone. That's what the tales said, right? Yeah, the space guy, he put him down, but the thing that gets overlooked in all the history books, is the fact that the life guy, broke the laws of nature. Summoning this... monster. I can only assume you wanted to summon it back to kill us all."
"For the record. I didn't mean for any of that to happen. And also, sorry about the leg."
It had metal around it now, holding it together. I could tell it was ditanium.
"Well, the leg wasn't your fault. It was your friends, wasn't it?"
I stared into his eyes. He was mad with anger. Just a sore loser, I guess.
"In a leader, sometimes there's a point of responsibility. The need to take credit for another persons actions, good or bad. Some people like you can say that they get credit for the good, and you take responsibility for their bad actions. Actions out of turn, but I say different. I say you should choose. They get responsibility for their actions, not you. That would be unfair."
"Bullshit. I was leading us. If he stepped out of line, it's a problem with my leadership."
Fred spoke up. "You're not the leader. And I'm not your follower. I'm responsible for my actions, they're my own damn will. I don't care what you think." He stood up slowly and the officer kept his gun on him. "So if you want revenge for your damn leg, kill me. I don't care. Let my family go."
He nodded too him, and turned away. He grabbed a knife from one of the officers and threw it into Fred's chest. Fred let out a small gurgling noise as he hit the floor. The man kicked him in the side.
"NOOO!" Mary shouted, jumping at him. She was dragged back into place by a wide eyed and obviously young activist. Fred was dragged off by another guard.
"Responsibility. As you are responsible for that, and responsible for-" he was cut off by Rachel and Gwen being dragged into the room.
"Chris!"
"Rachel, stand down!"
The officer dragging Gwen pushed her to her knees. "Sir, this one says she called us here. Her phone is the one we traced."
"Take all of them, but let me and Rachel go." Gwen said before he could finish.
"Oh, well you all have been caught in an act of treachery, so I have my doubts any of you are leaving this place alive."
"Gideon, you can't do that! I called you here, now you have to-"
" I give the orders around here Gwen."
"So your name is Gideon?"
He turned to me.
"I'll be honest, that is a really stupid name. Maybe not normally, but paired with that god damn face, it's just so dumb sounding."
He hit me across the face with his gun. I made a small orb in my hand and ran it up into my mouth to heal the wound. He stared at Rachel for a few seconds, and then walked over and hit her across the face as well. She fell to the ground, and I jumped at him. He fell, but the guards pulled me back. He got up and pulled Rachel unconscious to where I was sitting. He held her by her hair and pulled her to her feet.
"This is what we do to traitors." He held his gun to the back of her head. I stared at the gun, eyes full of rage, and suddenly.
Bang.
