CHAPTER Solar Noon

~Cora~

Today is Wednesday, and I totally forgot that Wednesdays was a day off.

My day off days from work are Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday, so I woke up early for nothing. Oh well, at least I'm getting up at all.

Today, I woke with Kako, again, laying beside me. I gave this boy my bed for the couch. He needs to respect my selfish decision with dignity!

I make him breakfast, something I now realize I've neglected for the past two days, and sit on the couch. I watch a few TV shows while I wait for him to wake up, but after the fifth We Bare Bears, I moved on to reading. Kako takes his good old time waking up, cause when he finally does wake up, it's already ten.

"Good morning." He yawned. He stretches his legs out and bumps my book. I mumble a yeah and continue reading. Cereal comes over to lick Kako's hand. He pets Cereal's head and glances at me. "So what exciting thing are we doing today?"

I sigh and bookmark my page. "We," I inform him, "are going to the place where I bought that one book you like."

Kako stretched again and sat up, "Are we going right now?"

"Not yet." We need to make a game plan. If this Middle-World is real, then we need to set out all the information Kako knows about traveling to it. I need to know how he got here, if he's been here before, and how he traveled here before. If I go get some paper to write stuff down then-

"Cut my hair." Kako says out of the blue. I almost don't hear him.

"Cut your hair?" I stare at him like he just grew two heads.

"Yeah, cut my hair." Kako messes it up with his hand. Long black strands stick up in some places, while others curl and bounce. His hair, I realize, has more body than mine. Lucky duck.

"What do you want me to cut it?" I ask, stretching out to push the hair out of his eyes.

He grins and tries to show me, "The man who did my tattoo had this strange hair- like no hair here," He motioned to the sides of his head, "but lots of hair here. It kind of swooped down." Kako pointed to the top of his hair.

"A Mohawk?"

"No, no! He called it messy something."

"A messy undercut?" It's the only hair style I can think of. I know a lot of actors and popular Youtubers with that hair cut, so I have an idea of what it would look like on him.

"Yes! That's what he called it! I wish for that, on my head." Kako sat up straight and tilted his head downward, like he expected me to start immediately.

This kind of catches me off guard. I scramble to move, "Hold on, I don't have clippers."

Kako waited impatiently while I left to search the bathroom. I looked through the drawers. The only thing I found was scissors. I left the apartment quick and borrowed hair clippers from the neighbors. When I got back, Kako was lying on his stomach on the floor, reading the Corona Evento.

I plugged the clippers in and pulled a stool into the middle of the kitchen, away from the carpet that I knew was already covered in dog hair. "Come on Kako," I called out, "let's do this!"

"Did you know that humans once visited the Middle-World frequently? But we had to set a curse later to make them forget about the other worlds because too many were coming in."

"Any day now."

"And that there's a secret about humans that the other worlders had to forget because it was too dangerous in the wrong hands-"
