"You bundled up nice and warm?" I asked Juliana one more time before opening the lobby door that led to the outside.
She shook her head yes. "I can barely put my arms down!" She walked outside and the door shut behind us.
"Like that kid from A Christmas Story, eh?" I asked her, grabbing her hand.
"You got my reference!" She grinned, looking up at me. "Brandon and Alex are kinda ignorant towards that kind of stuff."
I shrugged my shoulders. "What can I say? I'm fairly seasoned in my Pop Culture references and what not."
The fresh snow crunched under our feet as we walked side by side. Eventually, we found a bench near one of the many slopes and sat down. I put my arm around her shoulder and held her close to me.
"Is skiing scary?"
"Yeah."
"Real confidence booster, Wobbie."
"Oh. Uh. I mean... it is at first, but after you fall a couple times, you get used to it."
"What's it feel like when you fall?"
"Um." I paused for a second while I thought, choosing my words carefully. "Painful."
"But what kind of pain?"
"I dunno." I shrugged my shoulders. "Maybe something like what that guy is feeling over there." I pointed to a person on a stretcher.
"You don't think that a little bit of an overstatement, maybe?"
"Nah." I shook my head. "When you fall, you have to be careful to make sure a few curse words don't slip out of your mouth... cause they will. And the thing is, even when you're done skiing on the slopes, the pain sticks with you for weeks because you get bad bruises from all the falls."
"Why do I want to do this again?"
"It's fun."
"Yeah..." She looked at me like I was crazy. "Because falling flat like a pancake on my face sounds like such a blast..."
I started cracking up. "You won't fall if you ski right. See?" I pointed at a person skiing down the slope. "That idiot is going to fall in three...two... one... yup."
"How'd you know he was going to fall?"
"He was leaning forward too much. You can't do that."
Juliana just nodded her head.
