WE'RE SETTING OUT to Sterling's future today. I was a bundle of emotions.
Walking next to me was Elias, my savior. Honestly, I don't know what I would do if I hadn't met him. He changed my life in such a short time.
We were taking the old subway tunnels, and I was observing all the old trains that would forever be stuck in place. Sterling had a newfound attitude ever since Elias had shown up, and I was so thankful he had his childish spark back.
"We're really close. We have to time the exit right so no one sees us," Elias said in a very serious tone.
I just nodded, knowing that this mission was a fifty-fifty chance of success. I was all hope, and Sterling was too. I can't tell you how many times Sterling would look longingly out the window, watching the kids on the far street below play around. He just wanted to be free of this.
We reached an opening where the subway was in ruins. Elias waited about a minute, before motioning to run.
I grabbed Sterling and ran as fast as I could him with him on my back. We made it into this building on the coast, probably an old business building. It had a gaping hole in the glass wall, leading out to a cliff.
We were no longer in Seattle, we were in Anacortes now.
"Is that it?" Sterling asked, pointing out the concrete slab with a large black X on it. At one time, it might've housed some picnic tables, but now it was bare and uninviting.
Elias had already told me we had to jump into the water to reach the underwater facility, and our bays were disease infested. It was only a short way down though, so Elias said we should be safe. But that was only if anybody was still down there.
"Yeah. It's now or never. You ready?" Elias dragged out.
You could never be sure of anything now. This world was a one of hard choices and it was a scary reality. But, I wouldn't be who I am now if it weren't for the hardship I've been through.
"Are you sure this is going to work?" I ask. Elias grabs my hand and intertwines his fingers with mine.
"I guess we'll have to jump and find out," Elias smiled.
WITH THAT, WE TOOK A DIVE INTO THE UNKNOWN.
