21 - Confession & lightout

Rita opened her flat's lock and both entered silently. Her eyes scanned the living room. Everything was at its place. She sighed in relief. Although, the smell had became more pungent, but ofcourse, Raj didn't sensed that.

Raj waited in the hall while Rita went to her room to keep the mirrors.

Raj was still feeling guilty and was gathering courage to start the conversation normally. Feeling bad, he got up and walked towards her bedroom to apologise once more.

She found her standing on a small stool and changing a light bulb, which he assumed, must have got fused.

He stood silently behind her and waited for her to finish her work.

Rita was so engaged in her chore that she didn't even sensed his presence in her room. Thats why, when all of a sudden Raj's phone rang with loud ringtone, she got startled and hence, lost her balance.

With her eyes tightly closed, Rita was ready to feel the impact of the floor when pair of strong arms encircled her waist.
Slowly she opened her eyes. His handsome face, but with line of worries appeared in front of her eyes. He slowly put her down.

"Are you crazy? What if something had happened to you? You never think about yourself. Is my ringtone that b-bad that you wanted to kill yourself after hearing it..."He said as his voice cracked.

Rita was staring blankly at him. She couldn't understand whether to get angry on him, or laugh or just say what her heart wanted her to say. She herself had got tired ignoring her feelings for him. So, she chose the latter.

"How can anything happen to me when you are here...my hero...my love." She winked.

Raj couldn't believe his ears. So he asked.

"Am I really going insane in love with you or did you just called me 'your hero' ?"

"You heard it right Raj. I know I am bit late to express but I can't suppress it anymore. I love you....and honestly can't even imagine my life without you now. I accept that initially I wasn't too keen to give name to our relationship and may be it was because I was scared to lose any more people whom I love. But, you proved me wrong by always being there with me and thats why, here I am today...all yours...and madly in love with you." She admitted.

"Rita...you don't know, what you have given to me today. I am feeling like luckiest guy in the world. I love you too...more than you can ever imagine." He said and hugged her.

Later Raj too helped Rita fixing the mirrors on her room's wall.

The position of mirror seemed bit weird to him, so he asked her.."Don't you think so many mirrors in one room would take away room's beauty. I think one mirror was enough and others, you can use in hall or in other rooms."

"You are right Raj but I wanted something different for my room. I saw similar interior in one of my friend's home which looked quite impressive. So... I decided to give it a try. If it worked, I can recommend this set up to my clients also." She lied hoping he wouldn't ask any more questions.

"Okay....whatever you say...but...right now, I will die if I don't get something to eat.." He said clutching his stomach.

"Fine...fine...c'mon. Let's head to the kitchen. I hope you know how to chop onions." She asked before they both walked out of her room.

Together, they made rice and potato curry. After eating lunch, while they were relaxing, Raj got a urgent call from office. So..he left in hurry telling her that he will call her at night.

It was around five in evening. Rita started to feel chills with each passing seconds. Even a small sound startled her.

By six, it was already dark. She was continuously reciting mantras to help control her fear.

"No....Rita..you will never be able to do this if you let your fear control you." She reminded herself before she switched on tv to divert her mind.

Minutes later she drifted to sleep on the sofa while watching tv. Her eyes opened with sound of something falling hard on floor.

"What was that sound?" She thought and got up before looking around nervously.

"May be it was sound from tv." She muttered and turned it off. She checked time on her phone.

"Only ten minutes are remaining." She thought.

And suddenly, second sound came.

"Thud" . "Thud"

She clutched her cushion tightly, bringing it in front of her chest in defense. Her heart was hammering in her chest. She felt frozen on her place as she waited for another sound.

"C'mon Rita....You can't sit here like chicken - hearted. You have to be brave." She mumbled to herself before she slowly got up from sofa.

"Thud...thud." "Thud...thud".

Sound was getting louder. It was coming from her room's direction.

Cold - sweat appeared on her forehead . She tip-toed inside her room and glanced at that mirror. It was completely still. Sound has also stopped now.

"It must be window."  She thought and sighed in relief.

She was about to turn and walk back in the hall, when suddenly lights went out.

"Oh....wh-what happened to the
l-light." She gulped as light rarely got off in her building.

She thought to turn on her phone's torch...but then she realised that she had forgotten it in the hall.

"I have to get my phone." She mumbled.

She was about to leave the room, when something caught her eyes. She saw flicker of light coming from outside the room's window. She noticed that other buildings in her colony had electricity. It meant only one thing...there was power cut only in her flat.

"Something is not right...I should get out of here right now, but how? I can't see anything. I have to move very carefully." She thought wiping sweat from her face.

She started moving slowly with help of only little bit of light which was coming from outside.
Slowly, she reached hall and immediately picked up her phone from sofa. Quickly she turned on phone's torch.

Holding it, she rushed to her kitchen and took out few candles before she lit it up. She kept one in the hall, and other three she decided to place in her room.

She was placing the third and last candle on room's window slab when she again heard that sound..."Thud..thud" "Thud..thud" coming from behind her, followed by a voice which immediately made her realize that game of life and death had officially began.

A/N:-

So... finally both main characters expressed their love. Wasn't that moment cute?
But....the things which are going to happen with Rita after midnight will not be good for her.
Scary?
Definitely.
