Chapter 2

"Smokeypaw! Smokeypaw!" Someone called Smokeypaw's name. She lifted her head and blinked the sleep out of her eyes. She padded into the clearing. Her mentor Lightstripe was calling her name from inside the apprentices den.

"Over here!" Smokeypaw called to Lightstripe.

He turned around, his golden brown eyes sparkling.

"Did you sleep well?" Lightstripe asked.

"Yep!" Smokeypaw replied eagerly.

"Alright, sit down so I can explain how this is going to work." Lightstripe instructed.

Smokeypaw sat down and neatly tucked her paws under her chest. Lightstripe did the same soon afterwards.

"Normally, warriors wake up before dawn and head over to the deputy to go on patrols. Apprentices usually are woken up by their mentors if they do not get up by themselves. Sometimes, you will not be needed at that time and will be allowed to sleep in untill sun-high. Lightstripe explained. Smokeypaw nodded her head, allowing Lightstripe to continue.

"As you know, all apprentices have their apprentice duties. We usually alternate when apprentices do them. With 5 current apprentices that makes your lives much easier. You, Rainpaw, and Willowpaw have apprentice duties tomorrow while Sunpaw and Foxpaw have them today." Lightstripe continued.

Smokeypaw breathed a sigh of relief knowing that she didn't have to work with Foxpaw.

"This system might change when Rainpaw, Willowpaw, and Sunpaw become warriors in about a moon, but for now that's how it will work. Any questions?" Lightstripe asked.

"Yes, about training." Smokeypaw replied.

"I almost forgot! Training will be on the days you don't have apprentice duties and sometimes after apprentice duties too. You'll get breaks every once in a while and at the end of every moon I'm going to assess you on your progress." Lightstripe informed her.

"Oh okay. So when do I start training today?" Smokeypaw assumed she was starting today.

"Right after I show you around the territory." Lightstripe meowed.

"Okay." Smokeypaw agreed.

Lightstripe started padding to the entrance to the camp when he turned around, "What are you waiting for?"

"Oh, we're leaving now?" Smokeypaw asked.

Lightstripe nodded his head and Smokeypaw bounded over to his side. He lead her to a small stream.

"This is called Rising Waters because there is a series of streams connecting with each other that cause us floods whenever it rains." Lightstripe pointed his tail towards the stream.

Smokeypaw looked around and sure enough there were multiple streams connecting with each other in different ways.

"These streams are so small you could wade in the water. How could these cause floods?" Smokeypaw asked.

"Just the question I assumed you'd asked." Lightstripe chuckled before continuing. "Theirs so many streams that they just join together when it rains."

"Oh." Smokeypaw replied.

Lightstripe then lead her uphill to a sandy clearing.

"This is the Training Clearing. The sandy floor makes the impact softer if you hit the ground hard." Lightstripe showed her.

Smokeypaw took in all the different scents. The fresh grass soothed her pads. The leaves on the scattered trees were beautiful shades of red, orange, and yellow. WaterClan did not have many trees, but they were known for having various ponds, streams, and rivers.
