Chapter 4
Tonight was the gathering. Smokeypaw and Foxpaw had both been selected to go. Foxpaw was patiently waiting with the gathering patrol. Smokeypaw had wanted to say bye to Silvermoon before she left so she was a little late and kept the patrol waiting.
"Everyone is now here Steamstar." Mintleaf reported.
"Good. Let's go!" Steamstar led the patrol through WaterClan's territory. The cool grass felt good under Smokeypaw's paws as she swerved around trees and glided over debris. She felt like she could run forever.
Unfortunately, it had rained previously and Rising Waters had become one huge river. The water had slowed dramatically, but they needed to hurry due to the fact that rain was still in the wind. Thundering clouds billowed in the distance.
The gathering patrol stopped in front of the river. The senior warriors, the deputy, and the leader gathered together to decide what to do about the river. After a few moments they came to a decision.
"We have decided that the water is safe enough to swim to the other side in." Steamstar announced.
Being in Water Clan had it's advantages. Like the ability to be strong swimmers. The rivers provided good sources of food and water, and the trees were decently tall.
Smokeypaw wasn't as fond as going into the water as other cats especially when the whether was getting colder. She watched her clanmates jump in before her. She gulped nervously before plunging in after them. She forgot all her fears for a brief moment. Then, before she could reach the surface, her fears kicked in causing her to flail her limbs around and completely forget her training.
Her lungs burned and ached for air, but she knew what would happen if she tried to breathe. Just as she was giving up hope, jaws grabbed her scruff and hauled her out of the water.
"Kits aren't supposed to swim." Smokeypaw glared at her rude savior. She was surprised to see Sunflow.
"Wh-Why did you save?" Smokeypaw shivered from the cold. Sunflow ignored her and padded back to the patrol that had no idea she was drowning.
"Interesting..." Smokeypaw mumbled to herself. She trotted back to the gathering patrol just as they were entering Moon Trees. They were the last clan there. Smokeypaw looked around for Cloudpaw and saw him chatting with a StormClan apprentice.
"Hi Cloudpaw." Smokeypaw greeted as she approached Cloudpaw.
Cloudpaw turned to face her, "Not so shy anymore, eh?"
"You're the only one I know..." Smokeypaw trailed off.
"Make that two! My name is Frogpaw." The StormClan apprentice introduced himself.
"Hello Frogpaw. My name is Smokeypaw." Smokeypaw replied.
"You're soaking wet! What happened?" Cloudpaw observed.
"I nearly drowned in a river on the way here." Smokeypaw explained.
"I've heard that WaterClan has flooding problems when it rains." Frogpaw mentioned.
"Yeah, but WaterClan cats can swim." Cloudpaw argued.
"You both are right. It's just that I have this problem with fears and these fears make me forget my training and...You know..." Smokeypaw attempted to explain.
"I see what you're saying. It must be embarrassing." Frogpaw had sympathy glittered in his eyes.
"No kidding. Everyone always teases me." Smokeypaw complained.
"You should have seen Frogpaw at our first gathering!" Cloudpaw chimed in.
"No, don't tell her about that!" Frogpaw laughed.
"What happened?" Smokeypaw completely forgot her moment.
"So, during our first gathering we met each other. He challenged me to see who could climb the farthest on one of the moon trees. Then he spotted a bird on a nearby tree." Cloudpaw began.
"Oh StarClan, I wonder what is going to happen next." Smokeypaw rolled her eyes dramatically.
"Ugh." Frogpaw groaned.
"Frogpaw bragged that he could catch the bird, so he climbed a little higher and made the leap of faith. Frogpaw landed square on the bird, but the bird started flapping it's wings a little more than Frogpaw could handle and he ended up falling. He had feathers all over his face and he never got the bird." Cloudpaw finished.
"I have one question." Smokeypaw mewed.
"And that is?" Frogpaw flicked his tail.
"Why did you think you could get it?" Smokeypaw asked.
"I asked the same thing!" Cloudpaw stated.
"Ha ha. Very funny." Frogpaw repositioned himself.
"We should chat more often." Cloudpaw suggested.
"Definitely." Smokeypaw agreed.
"I don't know if I want to hang out with you guys." Frogpaw joked.
"Sure you don't." Smokeypaw sarcastically exclaimed.
"Whatever." Frogpaw muttered.
"Shh! The gathering is starting." A warrior quieted the three apprentices.
Frogpaw, Smokeypaw, and Cloudpaw looked up to see Lightstar let out a yowl.
"StormClan has been doing well considering leaf-bare is approaching. We have two new apprentices. Spottedmint has taken Thrushpaw as an apprentice. The other apprentice is Duskpaw." Lightstar called.
"Thrushpaw! Duskpaw! Thrushpaw! Duskpaw!" All four clans chanted the names of the new apprentices.
Lightstar stepped back as soon as Smallstar stepped forward, "BreezeClan has been doing exceptionally well. The prey still runs well despite the decreasing temperatures."
Next Steamstar spoke. "WaterClan has been doing fine. We did have a minor flood on the way here, but otherwise we're doing good."
"PineClan has a major announcement!" Greystar started. "Someone from the clans is a murderer!" Yowls of outrage echoed through all the clans.
"Lizardfang was found dead on the StormClan border. She had a fatal wound to the throat." Greystar explained.
"Greystar, are you accusing StormClan? Because if you are it could just very well be one of your cats who murdered her!" Lightstar accused.
"My cats would never do something like that!" Greystar argued.
"Nor would mine!" Countered Lightstar.
Heavy clouds passed over the moon. Darkness washed over Moon Trees.
"StarClan is angry!" Darkpool yelled.
"The gathering is over!" Called Steamstar.
StormClan cats stayed away from PineClan as the clans went their separate ways. Even Frogpaw and Cloudpaw started backing away from each other out of respect for their clans.
"Come on WaterClan!" Steamstar gathered her clan together.
"Goodbye Cloudpaw and Frogpaw!" Meowed Smokeypaw.
"Bye Smokeypaw!" Frogpaw and Cloudpaw said in unison.
WaterClan padded away into their own territory. The water level in the river had dropped enough for cats to wade in it. Smokeypaw was relieved at not having to attempt to swim again.
As soon as Smokeypaw padded into camp, rain clouds rained heavily causing Smokeypaw to get soaking wet. Smokeypaw sighed before slowly creeping into her nest. She wasn't tired and she tried not to think about what happened at the gathering, but one thought kept coming back. Who murdered Lizardfang?
