Chapter 6
Tomorrow would be Smokeypaw's final assessment day. Over the moons, she had over come most of her fears. Lightstripe encouraged her when she was afraid, and he was patient with her when she did something wrong. Lightstripe always had the right words to say.
Foxpaw hadn't done anything recently. However, about a moon ago, Foxpaw put ants in her nest. That was a very uncomfortable day for her. Surprisingly, Smokeypaw only had to train with Foxpaw three times in her apprentice training. And apprentice duties got easier with the help of some of the warriors.
Foxpaw was supposed to have his warrior ceremony last moon, but he wasn't able to due to an injury that has fully healed. Foxpaw would become a warrior the same day as Smokeypaw. Still, Smokeypaw could never be leader no matter how much she wanted to. She accepted this. This is how StarClan wanted it to be.
"Let's hunt near the main river." Foxpaw suggested. Foxpaw is being unusually nice to me.
"Okay." Smokeypaw agreed skeptically.
Foxpaw led the way through woven branches and prickly thorns. That's when suspicion really started to kick in. Foxpaw is leading me towards the east side of the main river. The deepest part.
"Good, the sun is in front of us." Foxpaw commented.
"I'll make sure my shadow isn't in the water too." Smokeypaw rolled her eyes.
"Great Starclan, no need to be harsh." Foxpaw meowed.
"I'll be harsh if I wanna be harsh. Besides, I have my reasons." Retorted Smokeypaw.
"Seriously, chill."
"What does that even mean?"
"I don't know! All I know is that Sunflow says it."
"You know, ever since you met him you've been constantly mean to me."
Foxpaw turned his head and Smokeypaw thought she heard him mutter, "I never wanted to." He couldn't have said that.
Then, before Smokeypaw could blink Foxpaw whipped around and pushed her into the river.
"I'm sorry!" He called, his eyes flickered with something Smokeypaw had only seen when they were only kits. Sorrow.
But Smokeypaw didn't forgive him. She plummeted deeper into the water. Hatred fueled her bones and gave her the strength the swim. Smokeypaw emerged through the water and climbed onto land. A blast of cold wind suddenly hit her. If she didn't hurry she would freeze to death.
As she walked the painful walk back to camp she heard voices.
"Smokeypaw fell into the river while trying to catch a carp. I tried to save her, but the current was too fast. By the time I was about to dive into the river after her, she was already deep in the river and being carried to the north side." A voice explained. Foxpaw.
Smokeypaw walked closer and could finally see the bodies.
"Oh Smokeypaw...You never were that good of a swimmer," A voice from a pale ginger pelt filled with concern meowed. Lightstripe, he-he never believed in me.
"It wasn't your fault." Oakcloud chipped in. Oh yes it was.
"I don't think she made it." Foxpaw's eyes were glinted with guilt.
"Even if she did make it to the surface she probably would have froze to death. The north side of the river is faster and it's awfully far from camp." Lightstripe spoke.
Oakcloud sighed and dipped his head. "Smokeypaw will be missed."
How dare he! I can't believe he would purposefully kill me and then tell them it was an accident!
Oakcloud, Lightstripe, and Foxpaw padded back into forest. Oakcloud and Lightstripe were clearly shaken by Foxpaw's story while Foxpaw seemed utterly fine. Almost as if he didn't care.
Smokeypaw scowled. Foxpaw, you're not going to get away with this.
Did you enjoy? Comment what you thought below! Sorry for the even shorter chapter. I just had writers block and I decided the best way to continue the story was to end the chapter here.
Until then...
