Chapter 3
Tyler and Ryder burst through the office door. I probably look like I lost my mind. Right now I'm rocking back and forth in my dark office corner, the only light provided is from the open doorway. They share a look and both kneel down in front of me.
"Hero what's the matter? You just screamed like a mad woman." Ryder points out. I glare at him.
"Thanks Captain Obvious!" I exclaim. He throws his hands in the air in mock surrender. Tyler rolls his eyes.
"Hero, what happened?" Tyler asks. I hesitate before starting the story.
***
"So let me get this straight," Anne says. "You decided it would be the best thing in the world to contact a mystery Aunt; the no one told you about, might I add, and ask her questions." She points out. I nod.
After I told Tyler and Ryder the story, they insisted that I tell the rest of the gang immediately.
I look around the room to take in all their reactions. Anne's stunned while Victor has an unreadable look; one that's been on his face most the time now.
"All I wanted was to know about why they would want me." I whisper.
"Wait... you never said the reason as to why you would be a target." Victor says from the corner of the room.
"Oh so now you speak?" I snap. I turn away from him and shake my head. "She said something about me and my family having this valuable secret." I look at Anne. "The only thing is that I was never told this valuable secret. My family died before they could tell me." I look down at the floor. I feel a hand land on my shoulder. I look up to see Josh.
"Hero, can I talk to you for a second?" He asks. With my mouth open I get up from my chair and walk out of the courtroom.
"Josh, what is this about?" I look at him. He avoids eye contact. "Josh?" I say.
"That family secret," I look at him with wide eyes. "I was told it."
"Josh what are you talking? My family died, you couldn't have known unless they told you." He doesn't answer. "They told you?" I assume. He nods.
"I went to the hospital when I heard about the crash. I didn't know who it was but I did realize that it couldn't have been a coincidence that your parents were going to meet up with someone for an exchange that night. When I got there the doctor asked what my business was with your parents so I told them that I was their son in law, when I entered the room your dad gestured me to come closer.he told me with his dying breath." I looked at him with wide eyes.
"Well, what was the secret?" I ask. He looks me in the eyes.
"A secret family fortune." He says. I slump.
"That's it?" His eyebrows furrow.
"Yeah. Why aren't you happy about that?" I shrug.
"It's just money. Something to bribe people with, a simple metal token that holds all the power in the world these days yet, some people don't even have that miracle. Some people work hard just to get one bill paid off, to put a roof over their head, to buy the medicine their child needs, yet some don't move a muscle to get what they have. Heck, some live on the streets and don't get paid attention to!
"I just thought that there would have been something more. Maybe something like a family possession that has been passed down cause then you know that it has some real value to it; love." He just smiles.
