Chapter 9
"Hero?" Tears started slipping from my eyes as I turn to her.
"Who's my parents?" I ask. Her head shakes slightly.
"Hero, no ones knows who your real parents are. They just dropped you off at the orphanage and you got adopted a few days later."
"I need to find them." I whisper. She nods her understanding.
"I know and I support your decision but, these people don't want to be found." She points out. I nod.
"I don't care, I need to know what the hell is happening and who I actually am meant to be. I can't do that without knowing who my birth parents are." I go scouring through the box until I find a typed message to my parents.

Watch your backs Dobou, you won't see us coming. But keep in mind that this could've been avoided if you had listened to us and gave back the leader's daughter.
He will always be watching, either up close or a far, but you'll never spot him.

I look over at Jane, who's been looking at family photos, and show her the paper. She reads it over and then looks back at me with a sigh. She points to the symbol at the bottom of the message.
"This is the Undertakers symbol." She states. I nod.
"Figures." I state, a little salty. Jane looks at me and puts the paper aside.
"Hero, you do realize what that means." I nod.
"I'm the daughter of my rival gang." I voice.

Jane and I walk into the gang house with the evidence box in hand. Victor comes up beside Jane, Tyler and Ryder ahead of us, Anne beside me, Kim and Josh behind us. I turn around in circles for a moment before pausing.
"What the hell is going on?!" I exclaim. Anne looks at me.
"We could ask you the same thing." She crosses her arm across her chest. I raise an eyebrow.
"What does that mean?" I get into her face. She shrinks back a bit before regaining her confident posture.
"Josh told us about the fortune." She states. I put my hands on my hips.
"Ah yes. The fortune I know nothing about!" I scream. She sags.
"Oh." She replies. I scoff and turn to Josh. Him and Kim both look petrified, not knowing what was happening.
"Did you even tell them about me not knowing what the hell it is?" I direct at Josh.
"Yeah. They were all just being morons and thought that I was lying when I said you had no idea what it was." He shrugs. I turn and look at everyone around us. I shake my head in disappointment before taking the box out of Jane's hands and push it against Anne's chest.
"Run everything through the scanner no questions asked. Do I make myself clear?" I authorize. Her eyes drift down to the box in her hands.
"Yes Hero." She whispers. I turn to Kim.
"She'll probably need help," I turn back to Anne. "Even if she doesn't, stay cause then I at least know that there's one person I can trust in that room." Anne looks up at me with tears threatening to come out. I can feel the tears welling up in my eyes as well and I'm sure she saw them too but before any fell, I marched to my office with Jane in tow.
"Hero, I understand that your angry bu-" Jane closes the door
"NO! Jane, you obviously don't otherwise you wouldn't be in here right now, you wouldn't be talking to me right now, you'd be out there trying to talk them through the things they need to do! Or hell, maybe you'd be up helping Anne and Kim, I don't know!" She takes a few steps back. I sigh and turn toward my desk.
"Just go away Jane." I whisper. I hear her walk toward the door When I sit down to start going through some of the papers on my desk, I can hear muffled voices outside of my office. One of the three I can classify as Jane the other two are talking too quietly to tell. The door opens and clicks shut soon after the voices stop.
"Hero?" I look up to see josh and Ryder standing in front of the door nervously.
"What is it?" I sigh. They move up closer and take the seats in front of my desk.
"Anne just updated us on the files, she got through them all except for the threatening message. It seems it'll need a few more hours to scan before she can get something off it." Ryder explains. I nod.
"Okay." They share a look. I look between them while they talk through a seemingly telepathic conversation. At last Josh turns toward me.
"That's it? Just 'okay'?" I nod slowly.
"Unless there's something else that I need to be aware of." Josh shakes his head.
"Hero, this is taking a turn on you. All of us have noticed and it's only been a few hours! You need to come and talk to Anne." Josh stated.
"Josh." I deadpan. "I could barely look at any of you. Especially her." I sigh.
"Jane was right, all people are are weaknesses." I whisper. Of course, Ryder and his super senses pick it up.
"Jane isn't right. You wanna know why?" I shake my head.
"Ryder, she is. I'm gonna make all of you guys get killed, so it might be best to just lose you guys now while I'm not really together." They both shake their heads.
"Hero look at me." I glance up to be met with Josh's icey stare. "We are here no matter what. Even if you think that you're jeopardizing our life, guess what! They were in jeopardy since we joined a gang! So it isn't you who's killing us, it's ourselves." Ryder nods his agreement.
"Hero, it hurts to find out you aren't as important to someone as you thought you were." Ryder states as he gets up and leaves the office. I share a look with Josh.
"He'll come around." He says. "Just pay attention to the people that care about you." He gets up and heads to the door.
"The quickest way to get someone's attention is to no longer want it." I voice.
