I got out of my seat and ran after Kari.
I found her in the hallway. I pulled her in for a hug.
" Hey listen. No matter what the judge says today I will always love you. And you'll always be my little shadow." I said to her.
We walked back into the courtroom together.
" Kehlani Parrish to the stand please." Said the judge.
I slowly walked to the stand. I pray to god this judge gives joint custody or full custody to me. I really can't lose her when I just got her.
" First question. What is your relationship to the child ?" Asked Dave's lawyer.
" I'm her legal guardian. I adopted her 1 1/2 years ago." I replied.
" What makes you a better guardian then her biological father." He asked.
" Well for one I've known her longer. So I have a better understanding of her likes and dislikes. I know her allergies. Her night routine and other things that aren't on a file about her." I said.
" Why should you have full custody of the child." He asked.
Before replying I looked at him like he was stupid. He basically asked me the same question over again. Just worded differently.
" I don't want full custody. Your client is the one who wants that. I don't understand how anyone can take this man serious asking for full custody. If he had never came to my interview at the Breakfast Club and we went to lunch together. He wouldn't even know who Kari was. He literally spent not even a day with her and he wants full custody. It makes no sense. I'd be more than happy to settle for joint custody." I said.
" But I refuse to let the best thing that happened to me to walk out my life without a fight. Before I got that knock on my door. I was in a dark place. Kari's aunt on her mother's side Alexandria Smith was my best friend. She was murdered by her abusive boyfriend and I wasn't there for her. I was on my first tour. When I came back, they were putting her in the ground. Nobody wanted to tell me because my career was just starting and they didn't wanna mess it up for me. When that lady knocked on my door and said Kari was her niece. It was like my second chance to do her right." By now I was crying.
" Kari Chanel Smith was. No is my light in this dark world. If you take her away from me. It's like your taking away my light." I said
" You can leave the stand now." Said the judge.
As I walked back to my seat. I looked at Dave. He held an emotionless stare. That cold bastard. Couldn't he see that Kari was My Everything.
