"Let them go!" I yelled, struggling against my captor like a deranged animal. They took us by surprise, breaking down the front door and throwing in flash bangs that temporarily blinded us. My parents fought back, but they were no match against the intruders. I was ordered to run, but I wasn't a very obedient child. Instead, I stood up and fought. I was quick on my feet, and managed to bring one down. But then one of them got me in a choke hold. Before I could squirm out of it, the cold barrel of a gun pressed against my skull. I froze. My dad turned around and in that moment of distraction he got punched across the jaw, the sickening crack of broken bones echoing through our house. Just like that, we lost.
The men just chuckled and smashed a chair on my dad. My dad's knees gave away beneath him and he fell down, trying to support himself using his only able hand. My mom screamed in horror and rushed to his side. "Don't leave me Chris! Not now!" my mom cried in despair, cradling his head on her lap and clutching on to his bloodied shirt. He intertwined their fingers together and looked lovingly into her eyes.
"J'aime vous, Isabelle." my dad murmured softly, making my mom sob hysterically. He turned his swollen eyes to me and gave his signature smile, but the painful wince that followed didn't go unnoticed. "I love you Angel, always will." those were his last words as his eyes fluttered shut and his lifeless body fell limp in my mom's lap.
My mother screamed, but before she could react one man took out his gun and without the slightest hesitation, shot her in the stomach. Blood spurted out, spreading through her white blouse and her hands as she pressed her palms against the wound. My throat was so dry I couldn't scream, even whimper. I struggled against the man who was holding me and managed to head butt him. He groaned and clutched his injured face. Taking advantage of the lack of restraint, I quickly sprinted to my mother's side.
"I love you baby. Dad loves you too. Run baby don't look back just keep on running, okay?" my mom coughed out, her pearly white teeth now stained with her own blood. I held her hand tightly, paralyzed with shock as her heart stopped.
"Well, well, well. The poor lass is on her own. Fiesty thing aren't you, thinking you can just punch us like that? Let's see if your so tough when we're done with you." One of them said, cracking his knuckles as he strode towards me. I jumped to my feet and ran. Without another look at my dead parents or the bloodied house, I jumped out of the window, the glass shattering to pieces, some of it cutting deep into my flesh, but I was too numb with shock and anger to feel anything as I ran to the forest. They chased after me, and gunshots rang out, with bullets whizzing past me. When I reached the town the gunshots stopped and I looked back. They were going back? "I hope I'm safe now." I thought. But I didn't stop running. It was 1.00 am, so no one saw me running in tattered clothes that were covered in blood.
When I reached the outskirts of the town, I paused, leaning against a tree and painfully breathed in and out, trying to steady my breathing. Suddenly an ear splitting boom resonated through the night air, the earth vibrating beneath my feet. Losing my balance, I fell down giving a painful wheeze as well. I wasn't an idiot, I knew what they did. They blew up my house... my home. The wailing of police sirens urged me to move on. Blinded by the tears that were spilling out, I stumbled straight into a tree and I hugged on to it, willing all of this to be a nightmare. My energy was weakening and my knees gave away beneath me and I kneeled down on the ground. I looked up at the sky, at the twinkling stars and the crescent moon.
Then I screamed.
I screamed, letting out all my fear and anger. No one heard me. Only the thunder rumbled in response. Soon, fat rain drops fell on my wet cheeks, washing away some of the blood and dirt. I felt someone place their hand on my shoulder.
"I give you a choice. Come with me and be safe or stay here and die." the stranger said, giving me his hand. I warily turned around and stared into his brown eyes, and for the first time that night, a warm feeling came over me, I felt safe with him, as if I could trust him. Trusting my gut instinct, I kept my hand in his. He gave me a warm smile and pulled me to my feet. I returned him a tired smile. Noticing my state he picked me up as if I was a feather and held me against his chest. I closed my eyes, breathing in the comforting smell of pine and rain as my saviour's heartbeat lulled me to sleep, letting darkness take over.
