The minute me and Alyssa step out of the car in the parking lot of the mall, we go insane. We grab hold of each others hands and skip to the entrance, giggling.
"Where should we go first?!" I ask, jumping up and down. She shrugs.
"Wanna get some Starbucks? It's on me." she says, squealing and squeezing my hand. We both agree then head straight for the food court.
The food court in our mall is HUGE. It has a Chipotle, McDonald's, Panda Express, Taco Burrito King and many dessert places. We make our way to the small Starbucks stand by Panda Express and order some caramel frappes.
Alyssa pays for the two coffees and we go to sit at a nearby table. I take a sip of my iced caramel frappe and decide to start some small talk.
"So, how's school going for you Alyssa?" she nods in approval, meaning that she has had good grades. She takes a swig of coffee and smacks her lips.
"School is good. I have a B in US History but everything else is an A... I'm very good in French class". Alyssa always has had a fascination with the French culture so I had a feeling she would have taken a foreign language class in high school.
"Oh wow! What do you know how to say so far?" I ask. She taps a finger on her chin, averts her eyes left to right and then says a few words.
"Grenouille is frog... chien is dog..." she drawls, thinking of something more.
"Can you say a full sentence in French?" I ask eagerly. I've always wondered if she has a knack at talking in a foreign language. I sucked at any language, even Spanish. I was taking the Spanish basics class this year and I had a low B.
"Mon chat est coincé dans un arbre." I cock my head to the side in confusion.
"It means my cat is stuck up in a tree" she explains. I choke on my coffee and throw my head back laughing so loudly that passerby look at me to see if I am okay. Alyssa pats my back till I stop choking.
"You- you- oh my gosh... that's all you know?" I coughed, patting my chest softly.
"No, I know more." she says.
"How about a sentence that won't make me choke on my coffee?" I advised, sticking out my tongue out at her.
"I'll make sure you choke on this one too" she teases, poking her tongue out at the side and winking. We smile at each other.
"Pouvez-vous me dire où est la gare est?" she had a perfect accent, pronouncing each vowel correctly. I was impressed.
"What does that mean?"
"Can you tell me where the train station is?"
"Oh" I take a giant swig of my caramel frappe and now it's her turn to ask me. She leans on her hand and looks at me.
"What about you? Are you taking any languages?" I nod.
"I'm taking Basic Spanish." I explain. She furrows her eyebrows.
"Spanish is such a boring language... I'd rather take French ya know?"
"Mom made me take it..."
"Oh... well, what do you know how to say so far?" I tried to think of a recent thing that I learned in class. My teacher, Senora Galvez was teaching us about food and how to say "i like".
"Me gusta queso y ajo"
"What does that mean?" Alyssa questions, crinkling her nose.
"It means I like cheese and garlic." I explain. Alyssa wrinkles her nose at the word "garlic". I knew Alyssa didn't like garlic so I said the word over and over to annoy her before she clonked me on the head with her empty cup.
