I wake up to my phone ringing, I answer it knowing exactly who it was rolling onto my back placing the phone to my ear.

"At this time 23 years ago.. was the first time I laid my eyes on my beautiful baby girl," I start laughing interrupting her the birthday monologue, "Hello Mama."

Without even hearing me she continues with the story, "You my darling, were the quickest labor ever but boy did I hate you so much."

My mom loved me, but she will always hold that against me that she wasn't able to get an epidural during labor because I came to fast, so she had me the old fashioned way, painful.

She calls me every year on my birthday at the time I was born... I really do wish I wasn't born at midnight, so I didn't have to wake up to her phone calls every year. But I love her with all of my heart. She is all that I have, and I'm so thankful for that.

My dad was the love of her life, but that is where things get complicated.

July 12th, 2012

My 18th birthday was when my mom decided to sit me down and tell me about my father.

"Sophie, there is something I have been wanting to tell you. But I needed to wait until you were 18." She takes a breath, and adds "Sweetie, you're half werewolf and -"

I tilted my head trying to follow what she was saying.. Is my mother high and/or drunk?! I try to interrupt her but she keeps on talking about my father.

She then told me the story of when she met my Dad. When my mom was 16 years old, she moved to a new town because her family got relocated for work in Bend, Oregon. The first day of school, she met my father, Adam, and the rest was history.

They dated for a couple of years, and on his birthday he told her something she didn't believe. He was a werewolf, and on werewolf's 18th birthday their Wolf is able to find their mate. Since my mother is human, he broke her heart by letting her know he can't be with her anymore.

He told her everything about being a werewolf because he could sense something she couldn't yet.... My mother was pregnant with me.

So on that day, my mother was left heartbroken and pregnant.

She told me that my father wanted me to know that he loved me, but he couldn't be there for me. If he was to tell anyone, I would be killed because I'm a 'Mutt.'

"I'm telling you this now because this is when you're going to change.." UH WHAT, CHANGE?!

"Since you're only half werewolf, your Wolf isn't as strong as a Pure Wolf - " I'm still sitting there, baffled by the fact that my mom just said I'm half wolf so non nonchalantly.

"Your father didn't know what would happen because Packs try to hide Half-Human Half-Werewolves from the world. They are frowned upon, because they aren't a pup of True Mates. But he did know that on a Half-Werewolf's 18th Birthday, they start to get their Wolf abilities."

I'm staring at my mom, about the pick up the phone and call a therapist, but she grabs my hand and looks me in the eyes.

"Sophie, focus," She looked at me sternly and commanded, "Close your eyes. What do you hear?"

I close my eyes and listen. At first, I don't hear anything unusual. But gradually, as I stood there listening, I hear people talking. Two women talking. Their voices were suddenly so clear I could've sworn they were walking directly past me. I open my eyes and look out the window. Across the yard and through the window-pane, I see two women on their usual morning walk, gossiping about their husbands.

"Mom, I hear what they're talking about... how is that possible?"

"Wolves have amazing hearing...do smell anything?"

I pulled my gaze from the window.

I sniff, and at first all I could smell was my mother's perfume. But I took a stronger, deeper breath  and suddenly I could smell the trees, freshly cut grass and my favorite flowers; tulips.

My eyes snapped open and I looked at my mother in an almost primal-like fear.

She put her small, warm hands on my shoulders. "Sweetie, I know this is crazy. But you're going to have to listen to me.. Your father gave me strict orders for you to follow for your safety."

I blinked twice before I could answer. "My safety?"

"Yes, as you know now, wolves can smell everything. Every wolf has a certain scent, so they can find each other. But we don't want anyone to find you."

At this point I was almost in a trance-like state, "So what can I do?"

"You are going to need to train how mask your scent..", I suddenly noticed tears threatening to fall from her gentle, fearful eyes, "I know this is going to be shocking, but you will need to do this for the rest of your life...we can't let anyone find you."

At this point, I felt numb. But I managed to answer my mother softly, "...Okay, how am I supposed to mask my scent?"

My mother sniffed quickly, and gathered herself-- hoping I wouldn't notice her remorse. She pulled a folded envelope from her cardigan pocket. She looked at it hesitantly for a brief moment before finally admitting, "Your father sent you this letter last week. It's going to tell you what you need to do and need to know." My mother handed me the envelope with a shaking hand.

Tears began brimming her eyes again, "Please read it," she paused to catch the hitch of emotion in her breathe. My heartbeat quickened and I felt a rush of adrenaline as she uttered her next words:

"You're going to hear a voice in your head soon, and that will be your Wolf talking to you."

I paused to take this in.

This was so much. No...this was TOO much. I suddenly felt an almost uncontrollable urge to lash out at this obscured situation, "Mom, what the hell are yo--"

And before I could finish my outburst, I was abruptly interrupted by a shrill and chipper voice:

Hi Sophie, my name is Margaret!
