Chapter Five
Sam was running towards whatever the movement was. I opened the car door enough for me to get myself out but not fully. “Sam! Don’t, you can’t. You don’t know what it is!” I was screaming in fear, I was no longer upset I was scared shitless. “Sam!” He glanced back at me, “Get in the car now Olivia, call my father and tell him ‘It is him.” He said firmly without any fear in his voice. I stare at him, confused, shocked, and lost. “OLIVIA!” I snapped out of it; locked the doors, grabbed my phone and kept watching Sam.
Sam was still pacing the tree line, with anger in his body language “Senior! Thank god, something is going on…” I heard a click before I finished speaking “Hello?” I didn’t hear him but then I heard some movement. “Where are you guys?” I gave him the mile marker, and exit number where the gas station was. He wasn’t going to get here in time, something wasn’t right. Something bad was about to happen – and Sam was in danger because he has to be ‘super hero’ and all. What was going on with him, what the hell is going through his head? “Sam, come on. Let’s go.” He still ignored me, pacing back and forth along the line of the trees still. I rolled up the window when I heard something deep in the woods, like an animal of some sort.
About an hour goes past knowing Senior is on his way – he should be here soon. I roll down my window as I see another animal figure in the trees’ “Sam, your dad will be here soon. Come get in the car please!” He didn’t take his eyes off the animal; he then began to mumble something under his breath. A few more minutes pass by, and I heard Senior’s truck pull next to my red Durango. I look at him as he pulls up his expression wasn’t something I was expecting. He looked mad but sad. He glanced at me without having to say anything – his eyes told me it wasn’t safe right now, that something was going to happen. He walks up to Sam while it looks like Sam is explaining to Senior what happened and the time he was getting there.
They both look at me and turn back around to talk. Sam finally started to walk towards the car – he came to my side of the car having me roll down the window. “Let’s go honey” he gave me a look I’ll never forget his face looked so worried, “Get back on the highway, and go north about seven miles down. There will be a gas station there, a real one not an abandoned one. Wake Bella up, get some food, and try to stretch out a bit okay?” He could tell I was worried, but he tried to make it seem that it was alright. “No, not without you” I sounded like a child, almost like my daughter when I started going to work for the first time and took her to a day care.
Tears welded in my eyes, one drops down my cheek but Sam catches it with his finger. “It is okay, Dad and I have to figure a few things out okay? I’ll explain it later I promise okay Olivia” I heard another animal noise from the woods and Senior glanced back at us. “Go, now Olivia!” I didn’t think twice – it wasn’t safe. Sam knew what he was doing right? Maybe Senior knew more of whatever was happening. I listened to Sam and drove to the gas station he told me about.
Before I woke Bella up I decided to call my mom. I kept hearing the phone ring, she didn’t pick up so I left a message “Hey mom, we are going to be a bit late. I am feeling sick so we pulled over so Sam could take Bella to eat while I rest in the car. It’ll be about another five or six hours. I love you!” I hung up the phone right as Bella started to move around.
Bella woke up freaking out “Mommy! Where is Sam, is he okay?” I tried to keep my emotions together – I had to be strong for my daughter. “Yeah sweetie, he’ll be back. Grandpa brought us something we forgot and they are going to be back soon.” She seemed relieved when I said that. “Are you hungry?” She nodded her head in agreement trying to look around at where we were. We headed into the gas station that had a Burger King built onto it.
