Chapter Three

Everyone’s face turned to smiles, even Bella’s as we told them the news. “I am going to have a younger brother!” Bella squealed, she talked about having a sibling but then she was thankful that she didn’t at times. “Sweetie, we don’t know yet. I hope that you have a brother though” His parents congratulating him and I on the pregnancy and engagement.

They didn’t care much of the situation, as long as their son was happy so were they. I went up to Barb to hug her “I knew it the whole time Olivia, I may be old – but my motherly instincts knew.” She whispered in my ear. I looked at her a bit confused, “How?” She glanced around to see if anyone was paying attention. “The puffiness in your belly, the way your breast are two times bigger than last time I saw you, and the sickness. I saw the glow on you but I was just waiting for the time you two told us, I am very excited for you Olivia.” I hugged her tightly when she pulled me away “Don’t worry about anything okay? We’re all family now.” I didn’t know what she meant by ‘don’t worry’ but it was nice that she was reassuring me.

The night goes on and on. Sam and I were lying in bed when we started to talk about how to tell my mom. He said “Just like we told my parents”, then I told him about what Barb said. “She always knows things, she knows about everything without you having to tell her. It’s scary but you get used to it.” I glance at the television, “Could it be because of the Cody situation, to be scared it might happen again?” He sits up a bit more. “Olivia, I am not like Cody. You know that I wouldn’t leave you. I love you way too much. Plus, I think Bella would send out a search party for me.” We laughed and it was true, Sam is ten times the man anyone will be.

I dosed off into his arms when another dream came creeping into my mind. I was jogging down an empty road in the country.  No noises but my feet hitting the pavement and my breathe increasing with my heart rate. A deer came out of the trees; it paused when it heard me then I came to a stop to admire it. It was such a graceful animal; so silent in the woods, before it jumped back into the trees on the other side of the road. I saw my body being flung like a rag doll when a car of teenagers didn’t see me while changing the radio station. I was lying sprawled out on the pavement, hearing teenagers shriek for help. I was dead; no help was going to be enough.

I jerk myself off the bed and land onto the cold wood floor. “Olivia!” I hear Sam hollering for me in worry. “I’m okay, just a bad dream.” He came to my side of the bed and helped me off the floor, “Another one?” I looked up at him; he knew I had nightmares frequently after he got hit by the car. “I’ve had two today, I just don’t get it at all.” He tucks me into bed like I was a little girl, “I’m sorry Olivia, so sorry” I could see in his eyes he was scared for me.

We began to be silent; we curled up in bed and watched a movie. I heard a change in his breathing to look up and see him dead asleep. I walked down to the kitchen to grab a glass of water; as I turned the corner going back up the stairs I ran into his dad head on. “Senior, so sorry I ran into you.” He looked at me very relaxed.

He always used his instincts to this day that he learned from being in the army, “It is fine Olivia, I heard you downstairs thought I would see if everything was okay.” He smiled at me, which was comforting because it made me think of how Sam smiles at me. “Yeah, just had a nightmare since Sam fell asleep I thought I’d get a glass of water.” Pulling my hand up to show him my evidence; “Okay, well I will see you in the morning.” He walked back to their bedroom while I slipped back into Sam’s old bedroom. I curled up next to Sam and finally fell asleep.

Bounce, bounce, bounce, then a boom. I look up and see nobody then Bella pops up into my face, “Hi, mom!” I choked on my own breathe; she scared the shit out of me! “Bella Pierce!” She giggles as Sam walked in probably from the boom noise that woke me up. “Bella, I told you to leave your mom alone. She couldn’t sleep at all last night.” She looks up at Sam a bit embarrassed “Sorry Sam, I got bored – I missed mommy.” He comes over to pick her up, and puts her on the bed. I am sitting up against the head board of Sam’s room which hasn’t been touched since he was in high school.

He had tons of awards and trophies. I saw a picture we took in college together sitting on his dresser, he told me he put it there after he left college and never took it down.  “It’s okay; just remember mommy is like glass. She cannot play rough like she used to.” She smiles as she remembers she’s going to have a brother or sister. “Sorry mommy, it won’t happen again.” I pull her close to me and kiss her forehead “It is okay sweetie, go get some cloths on and NO – pajamas are not cloths.” She sighs and walks away. For some reason she was in this phase of wearing pajamas as regular clothing.

We began to pack our things in our room, “What did you want to wear today?” I snap out of my thinking and I quietly tell him “Jeans and one of your shirts?” I wasn’t sure if had heard me but I look up at him to see his smile so big, he looked so cheesy. “It’s been a while since you’ve worn one of my shirts.” He was right, last time I wore one of his shirts was a few months ago. I just needed the comfort of him surrounding my body today. He always asked me what I wanted to wear, he helped me with a ton of things that would put me into “rush mode” so I wasn’t late for everything on my schedule.

I took a short shower, got dressed and I looked at myself one more time before coming out the bathroom. I was wearing his red cotton shirt it was tucked into my jeans. I wore my worn out shoes and my hair was pulled back into a braid. I walk out of the bathroom to find all of the bags near the stairs. I caught Sam before he took two more downstairs “I was going to help honey.” He gives me a small smirk “You can’t even walk down the stairs without tripping” it was true; I wasn’t coordinated with stairs or walking at all. I laugh as I walk towards both of our rooms to make sure everything is there.
