Chapter Four

“Car is all packed!” I heard Sam yell towards the stairs. I heard some mumbling of him and his parents talking. I couldn’t make out what they were saying. I hear pitter pattering from behind me; I turned to see Bella in a bright yellow shirt tucked into her jeans like me. She wore her brand new shoes her grandparents gave her that matched the shirt she was wearing, “Ready to go mommy?” I smiled towards her “Yeah sweetie, let me go say bye to everyone.”

She went to the door as I walked towards the kitchen “Thanks for having us. We’ll be back again soon.” She pulls back from the hug and looks deep into my eyes, “I know, we’ll miss you.” Now don’t get me wrong, I like his mom a lot; sometimes she just scares me a bit. Senior came over and gave me a huge bear hug, he whispers in my ear “Don’t listen to her, she is scary – trust me I tolerate because I love her. Plus after 25 years, you get use to it.” I let out a sign of relief, someone caught on to my uneasiness. “Thanks for having us Senior.”

They walked us to the door as I put Bella into her car seat I turned back to see Sam still near his parents. All talking silently, so silent I couldn’t even hear if I stopped breathing. The glances tossed around, the worried looks I started to get confused.  What was going on? What was the real reason for Barb acting so odd? I had to find my answers one way or another. I had jumped into the driver’s seat and start the car. Sam didn’t even turn to look at me; I had confusion written all over my face. His father waved at me, and his mother smiled politely. Sam walked over to the car with a last wave from all three of us as we leave the Pierces home.

An hour after we had started driving the quietness was driving me nuts. Bella had fallen asleep with her book on her lap – she was a deep sleeper so I knew I was in the clear to talk to Sam. “What were you and your parents talking about?” He doesn’t make eye contact and still stares out into the open road in front of us. I sigh when he doesn’t respond “Samuel Levi Pierce!” he heard the anger in my voice, which he never heard only a few times.

He snaps out of his daze on the road and looks at me. “Answer me please?” he wasn’t sure what I had asked so I asked him again “What were you and your parents talking about?” His expression didn’t change, but I could tell something was on his mind “Just about when we’d be coming back and all.” I didn’t believe it one bit, I felt it in the pit of my stomach something wasn’t right. “Why did they look concerned and worried, the silent talking, and the glances between you all?” I look over at him and we make eye contact – my butterflies grew and were fluttering so uncontrollable I had to take the next exit off the highway.

I parked at a shitty gas station that looked abandoned. I get out of the car, slamming the door. Bella didn’t wake up at all, she was still snoring. I pace beside the car – I didn’t know what was wrong with me; I had gone nuts!

“Olivia, what is going on with you?” I stop and just glare at him, at that moment I wanted to jump across the car and just hit him. I was so angry that he was lying to me – one thing I was never happy with was lying. A white lie I can understand but something that involves me I couldn’t stand it. “You’re lying to me Sam! You’re awful at lying.” I knew the way I said it hurt him, as if I really did go over and hit him.

He blankly stares at me when he turns his head to the left near the wooded area. His fists were clenched to his side, his knuckles were whiter than a ghost, and his body was shaking mildly. It wasn’t cold out though, the sun was shining on us and I could feel the warmth of it on my skin. I really concentrate on him when something inside me didn’t feel right, I was being watched. When I heard something from the wooded area, “Sam, get in the car – NOW!” He didn’t though; he stood right in front of the car. “Samuel Levi, I sure hope you know you’re not a damn super hero! Get in the car now please.” He still didn’t move, when I looked over where he was looking at the wooded area but now to the right of it where the forest gets deeper. Wait, what the hell was that? “SAM, No!
