Not long after dressing when a slight knock came to the door. motioned me to remain where I was as she moved towards the door to answer it, opening the door a crack and spoke softly to whomever was on the other side. But with my hearing as it was I could hear everything of what they spoke of.

"It seems that some of the soldiers are coming through."

"Already?" Mercédès spoke softly. "But it has only been..." she shook her head. "No, I suppose that dose not matter. Has Abigale already been informed of this?"

"Yes, she has. She is already working through with others in what could be done."

"Tell them to be careful we do not know what some of those men might try and do since the war ended. We should still tread with caution. Last thing any of us wants is for a girl to go missing during such a time." Mercédès then closed the door and let out a breath before turning to look in my direction.

"So, the soldiers have already made there way here." I stated not bothering to state if they were French or German. At this point it did not seem to matter much.

"Yes, sooner then we expected. As you are more then aware of what has transpired these past few months."

I had indeed, I was not about to become ignorant of the situation because Edmond and I were able to convince my brother not to enlist. That followed with my new vampiric hearing, and all of my new capabilities that I had yet to truly test. I grasped a better understanding of the unrest with the end of this war.

Following the fall of Napoléon III, much had become a worrisome future for the people of France, with it only being a week since it's official end. Recalling just how bloody it all must have been with not only the Third Republic of Paris being established in September of 1870, the Siege of Paris where the capital of the country fell in January of this year of 1871. Then finally a revolutionary uprising called the Paris Commune that had seized power in the capital and held it for two months until it had been bloodily supressed by the first of this year.

Just knowing all of that which took place in the span of a year was enough to make my stomach churn with unease. Even if it was all just hearsay it was a thought that made me worry for the future, even before I became what I was. But back then I was worried more so for my own future along side that of my mother then that of the country. Yet it was different now.

But what did make me wonder was how those who were like me, and how they were affected by all of this if at all?

"You should not have to worry," offered to me with a kind smile. "Things like this never truly last. It all comes to an end, sometimes it merely feels like an eternity."

I could not help but feel warry of just how simple she made it all sound.

"I am more then aware of that." I tell her. "Even still, it is hard for me to comprehend. Since not long before the end of this war I was still human. I still feel human." I grasped my hands tightly together as I tried to supress this sudden feeling of fear that began to swell in my chest but did what I could to keep it at bay. Now was not the time to feel such things. "I know it seems foolish, but I wish to hold onto that small human part for as long as possible."

Mercédès merely looked at me in response before changing the topic away from my worries and of war. "So, what is it that you wish to do when you return to Edmond's home?"
