"What have you done...?"
For some reason or another, those words broke me. Filled with such sorrow and despair as though this was the last thing he wished to see of me.
I could not answer, all I was able to do was to reach out and grab his waistcoat, grasping it tightly as it slowly became dyed with that man's blood. tears falling from my eyes as I struggled to find the right words. But all I could say to him was...
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry Edmond... please forgive me..."
He looked to me, eyes now on my dress before asking. "What happened," he asked. "Can you tell me?"
I let out a long slow deep breath. "I will, I will." I repeated still trying to cope with what happened myself. "But promise me you won't say a word until I have finished? Can you please do that for me, because if you interrupt I don't think I'll be able to find the strength to try again."
He grasped my hands and squeezed with firm gentleness. "Of course, I will."
I could tell he was sincere, hearing his sincerity seemed to give me strength, and told him, everything. All while he kept holding my blood-soaked hands.
"So, Anna has been sent to the hospital, it's probably the General Hospital." He let go of my hands and opened the door, where Francis, and the twins were standing idly in the hallway. "I need one of you to head to the General Hospital. Anna Dyer is there currently."
"I'll go!" Claire offered quickly. "I have a friend who works there as a nurse, she'll be able to keep this quite I'm sure."
Edmond shook his head. "We don't need to worry about that, right now Anna's priority is all that matters. Just make sure she's alright."
"Okay," Claire turned and quickly rushed down the hall, possibly to grab her coat and umbrella before catching the closest coach.
"What about me?" Cloé asked. "What do you need me to do?"
He looked between both Cloé and Francis before speaking. "I need Francis to go to where Abigale and Mercedes are, you don't know that part of town Cloé, so I need you to go and prepare a bath, no, a shower. Can you prepare one?"
"For you?"
"For Louise, Francis I need you to speak to either Mercedes or Abigale, and take them to this address," he said as he quickly wrote directions with a piece of paper and pen from his trousers pocket. "Tell them we need oil, lots of it. And matches. We have to destroy that building, it's abandoned so everyone will merely think of it as only an accident."
"Edmond what is all of this..." Francis trailed off when she got a good look at me, I hadn't moved from where he left me. "Oh, good god.
"That's what we need the oil and matches for. I apologize for putting you in a rather uncompromising position Francis, but please do this. For Louise's sake."
She squared her shoulders and gave a firm nod. "Yes Sir, right away."
"I'll go prepare a shower, for the both of you in separate rooms."
Edmond stopped her. "No, it's fine Cloé, just for Louise, I merely need to change clothes is all." When Cloé, left to do what was asked Edmond closed the door and turned back to me. "Did anyone see you?"
