Eliza was constantly checking her phone. It was a quarter after six and Alex still wasn't there. There weren't any messages from him either. Eliza nervously looked out of the window. Had he forgotten?
A few minutes later, she gave up trying to look for him. Eliza pressed her forehead against the glass and closed her eyes. He's not coming. She sighed, realizing that he wouldn't be here.
Finally, after what seemed like hours, the doorbell rang. Eliza jumped up at the sound and ran to the door. Alexander was standing on the porch, breathing heavily.
"I'm so," he took in a deep breath. "Sorry that I'm late. I had work to finish and," Alex looked up at her. "I'm so sorry."
"I'm just glad you're here." She smiled and walked out of the door. Once the door was locked, Alex linked his arm with Eliza's.
"Are you ready?" He asked her. Eliza smiled and nodded. "I hope you don't mind walking, we won't be going far though."
"Wait, did you walk all the way here?" She asked him curiously. "Is that why you were late?"
He chuckled nervously and lightly blushed. "Y-yeah. Your house was a lot farther than I anticipated." Alex looked away, ashamed that he was so late.
The two made their way down the porch and onto the sidewalk. There was a soft cool breeze, making Eliza's hair blow slightly. "It's a lovely night," Eliza said, after walking in silence for a few minutes.
Alexander looked around and nodded in agreement. "It is," he responded. "I'm glad I'll be able to spend it with you," Alex added.
Eliza could feel herself blushing. "I... Y-yeah. Me too," she stuttered. Why did Alex have to be so smooth with his words? Eliza mentally kicked herself for screwing up so easily. Best response ever Eliza. Way to go. Her face was now red with embarrassment.
To Eliza's relief, Alex didn't seem to notice her scarlet face. He simply continued walking with her. "How are your sisters?" Alex asked her. "I haven't seen them in a while."
Eliza let out a breath that she didn't realize she was holding. So he didn't notice my embarrassment. He actually had noticed, but wanted to change the subject so Eliza wouldn't feel uncomfortable anymore.
"They're doing just fine. Angelica was a bit skeptical that I had been talking to you," Eliza explained to him. "She almost didn't let me go tonight."
"Oh." He didn't know how else to respond. Angelica was quite protective over her siblings, so he understood her doubt. Who would want to let their precious sister spending time with a bastard orphan anyways?
"But," Eliza continued. "She let me go, obviously." She laughed lightly, noticing Alex's discomfort. "Peggy was extremely happy to have me go," Eliza added.
Alex smiled a little. "From what I know, it seems that Peggy is always cheerful. It's like the Sun never stops shining for her," he said.
"Oh yeah, definitely," Eliza said. "She has the enthusiasm of a five year old. I don't understand how she does it, especially with her job and starting collage soon."
"Where does she work?" Alex asked her.
"At the coffee shop a couple blocks away," Eliza answered. "She works the night shift and brings me home hot chocolate every Friday night. They make the best hot chocolate."
Alex chuckled. "That's great. I'll have to check it out sometime. Not much of a coffee person I assume?" He asked his date.
Eliza shook her head in response. "I personally hate it, but you know, everyone has different opinions." She shrugged a little. "What about you? Are you a coffee person?"
The boy laughed. "I practically live off of coffee. Don't know how I would survive without it," he answered. "I think that I might be addicted actually..." he trailed off and finished with a shrug. He gave Eliza a smile to make sure that she didn't have to worry about him. A little bit of coffee couldn't be that bad.
Eliza giggled softly at him. "I'm not sure if that's healthy," she responded, a little concerned. Eliza had been deemed the title of being the official "Mom Friend" in her group of friends a few years ago. Ever since she was young, Eliza had always had the natural tendency to be worried about the people she knew. Even her oldest sister turned to her for comfort sometimes.
"Pfft, I'll be just fine," Alex replied laughing a bit. "Don't worry about it." Eliza rolled her eyes jokingly at him, still not believing him. "Really. I'll be okay."
They turned the corner of the street, leading away from the bustling city. "You never did say where we will be spending our evening," Eliza said once they turned again.
Alex couldn't hide his mischievous smile from her. "Just you wait," he simply responded. He could hardly contain his excitement as they continued down the sidewalk.
A few minutes later, he stopped at the edge of the sidewalk. Eliza nearly ran into him as he halted. "We're here," Alex announced to the Schuyler. The small boy led her up the hill to their destination. There, sitting at the top, was a blanket and picnic basket. Alex took a seat on the blanket and patted the spot next to him, motioning for her to sit next to him.
"You did this for me?" Eliza asked him, looking around at their spot on the hill. She eventually sat next to him once her shock wore off a little.
Alex smiled and nodded. "Don't give me all the credit though," he said, pulling a sandwich out and handing it to Eliza. "John gave me the idea." Eliza accepted the sandwich and took a bite out of it.
Once she had swallowed, the girl finally spoke. "One of your friends?" Eliza took another bite, quite impressed on how delicious it was.
"Best friend actually. We've known each other ever since I moved here," Alex responded. He pulled out a bottle of water for Eliza since he didn't know what kind of drinks she liked and a Coke for himself. "He also encouraged me to ask you out for tonight," he added.
Eliza smiled and opened her water. "That's great. I'll have to thank him when I meet him for this," she responded, laughing a bit. Alex joined her in laughing and nodded. "He would like that."
Eliza looked over at him and smiled. It turned out that there was more to Hamilton than she would have ever thought. At first glance, any other person would have seen a young, somewhat scrappy kid barely hanging on. Eliza was starting to realize that there was so much more about this mysterious boy. He had suddenly sparked interest in everybody, including herself. As much as she had hated to admit it at the time, Eliza was secretly hoping to catch his eye the night of that party. She knew that her sisters would have teased her for it, and probably still would.
There was little interest in the gossip about him. Eliza needed to see him in the flesh to make a final decision about him. She was hoping that she was making the right decision. Every other girl would probably kill to be in Eliza's position right now.
Look around at how lucky I am to be alive right now.
