 Chapter Four

 

 Calla’s P.O.V.

 I ran as fast as I could but I knew I was already late by ten minutes. I would have been earlier but I got held up by some stupid neighbor who almost caught me shifting. She kept talking, and talking, and talking. I wanted to just scream ‘I got to go bitch!’ but I’m not that rude, not to mention she was an older lady. So now here I am, running at full speed in wolf form trying to make it to the meeting before my alpha notices I’m not there. He would kick my ass if I was late for another meeting! Last time I was late because I had fallen asleep and I forgot to set an alarm, the alpha wasn’t pleased to say the least.

 I finally made it to the meeting and sat quietly in the back. Good, the alpha didn’t notice that I was late. I saw Emily and Betty, my other friend from the pack, sitting towards the middle and I was fixing to walk over there when the alpha began to speak. Well, mind speak. Considering that everyone is in their wolf forms.

 ‘Shadow Moon pack, it has come to my attention that our neighboring pack, the Blood Rose pack, had been attacked by rogues.’ Everyone gasped, through mind speak of course, and began to chatter in worry.

 ‘Quiet!’ the alpha screamed. Silence fell over the pack and all eyes were on him. ‘Thus we must take more precautionary measures to make sure that our pack is not the next one harmed. We have also decided to aid the Blood Rose pack and allow some of their members to stay with us until the pack recovers from their losses. As for the precautionary measures, it has been decided that more patrols will go through the grounds and there will be a nightly watch as well as all throughout the day. We have decided who is taking turns throughout the night and patrolling and my beta will read off the pairs.

 The beta, Daniel Marks, stepped forward and began to list off the pairs in which people would be taking watch. I didn’t listen to the morning watch since it would be all adults because we had school, but I listened in when he started listing off the nightly watches.  Emily and Travis were taking the first nightly watch, Betty and Jared were taking the second, and Ridley and Fray were taking the third. I almost sighed in relief when I heard my name called.

 ‘And for the fourth watch it will be Mystery and Payton.’ the beta stepped back as the alpha stepped forward again. Emily looked back at me with a smirk while I stood there, in too much shock to do anything. Why me?!

 ‘Patrols start tomorrow, don’t be late or you will be punished. You are all dismissed.’ And with that he turned and left.

 Then everything finally sunk in. I’m going to have to spend all of my nights with Payton until this all clears up. Oh my god. What if he finds out? Should I talk to the alpha? No, he won’t do anything. He wouldn’t risk the safety of the pack over some stupid little crush and I can’t blame him. I guess I’ll just have to suck it up and deal. I was about to run over to Emily and Betty when Payton ran over. Speak of the devil, I thought. Emily and Betty both winked at me and took off, leaving me alone with Payton.

 ‘So, it looks like we’re going to be spending a lot of time together.’ He said with a sly grin. Dammit.

 ‘I guess so.’ I said, keeping my tone clipped. I think it’s best if I just ignore him for a while so he won’t guess who I am. I don’t want to get too close to him.

 ‘Are you mad?’

 ‘No, just tired.’ I answered and turned to leave, but he followed me and I internally groaned. He wasn’t going to make this easy was he?
