Chapter Sixteen:
“I can’t believe that we’re doing this.” Zak groaned.
I shushed him and continued walking through the woods.
“I mean really, Calla? Couldn’t we have found a simpler way to-“
“Shut up!” I snapped quietly.
He didn’t say another word. I and Zak were on a secret mission. The ceremony to crown the next Alpha was in two weeks. And so far, everyone thought that Terran (A.K.A. shape-shifter bitch) was going to be crowned Luna since Payton hadn’t found his mate yet. So we needed to find a way to find out Terran’s real name. Then our plan would be set in motion…
So me and Zak were headed to see a witch. Yep, you heard me right. A witch.
She lived somewhere in these woods. I used to hear scary stories from the other pack children about her all of the time when I was younger. But I had also heard that she was wise and a seer, so she knew almost everything. Sucking up our fear, me and Zak decided to find her.
Not even ten minutes later, we spotted a small cottage. It seemed warm and inviting but had an uncomfortable atmosphere. Guess we’ve found her. We walked up to the door and I knocked three times, biting my lip while Zak cowered behind me. God I wish I had brought Emily instead. But she had no clue about nay of this…
The door creaked open, but no one was there.
“Okay no one’s home, let’s go!” Zak said quickly, turning around.
I grabbed his arm and smacked him while he whined in pain.
“Quit being such a baby!” I snapped.
“Why do you come here?’ a voice called from the darkness inside of the cottage.
I gulped and took a deep breath.
“My name is Calla and-“
“I know your name child. I know your secrets and your identity you use to shield yourself from your own insecurities. I know you your friend too, although there isn’t much to him that I’m interested in.”
Suddenly the cottage was filled with light. And there stood a woman who looked to be in her mid-twenties with long raven black hair and golden eyes that held wisdom only a very old woman would have. She smiled at us and motioned us in.
I cautiously stepped inside and Zak followed.
“I take it that you are here to discuss the parasite that has infiltrated your pack?” the witch asked, sitting down.
I nodded.
“Well, then we have much to discuss. Please, sit.” She motioned to two chairs and suddenly they were right behind us.
We sat and looked to her.
“Let me tell you that what you two are planning will not be easy. In fact, I already know how it will turn out, no that I will tell you anything of the outcome. But before I give you the information you desire, I must ask if you are truly ready and committed to this?”
“Yes.” We said in unison.
She smirked and sighed, nodding to herself.
“As you wish.”
She poured herself a glass of what looked to be alcohol and crossed one leg over the other. She reminded me faintly of Morticia Adams.
“Let me tell you a story. There was once a pack of rogues that wanted nothing more than power, they were greedy beyond belief. So, they came to me looking for answers, much as you did today. They wanted power, and they wanted it bad, so I gave them a way to take what they wanted.”
She swirled the alcohol around in her glass lazily.
“I am the one who summoned that wretched creature. I do not regret it, I do not regret anything, but I wouldn’t mind if it went back to where it came from. Now I want you to realize that if it doesn’t come back, it does not affect me in the slightest. But you? You have much to loose now don’t you?”
“What are you playing at, woman?” Zak snarled.
She gave him one look and he was shivering in fear.
“Then why do you want it back so badly?” I asked.
“I don’t. Like I said, whether or not it comes back it does not affect me either way. I just wouldn’t mind if it went back to the depths of hell where it belonged. So, are you willing to make a deal?” she purred.
“What…kind of deal?” I asked curiously.
She smirked and snapped her fingers, a large book landing in her lap gracefully from the shelf. The book open and the pages flipped quickly, then suddenly stopped on a particular page.
“I’m glad you asked. Now, I don’t do things for free obviously. I’m a woman of trade. So if I gave you the name of the Shape-Shifter, you’d have to give me something in return.”
“What do you want?”
“Nothing that is of value to you. I just want something that was stolen from me.”
“And that would be?”
“An amulet. A black opal amulet to be specific. After I conjured up that vermin, it stole it from me so that it could use it for it’s own benefit.”
“So that’s why you want the shape-shifter back huh?” Zak asked with a smirk on his face.
Anger flashed through her eyes, but she calmed herself quickly.
“Not completely. So is it a deal?”
“Hold on. How do we…get this ‘amulet’? Especially if she has it?” I asked.
“That is not my problem, child. All I need you to do is find it and bring it back, and then I will tell you its name. But I will tell you this. She keeps it close to your heart. Now do we have a deal?”
We all stood and I took a deep breath before nodding and holding out my hand. She shook it and her eyes flashed black for just a moment.
“It’s a deal.”
