Chapter Five
When I got home my parents scolded me for getting detention and yelled at me for being so ‘irresponsibly rude’. Well excuse me! Freaking Zak started it…I mean he technically didn’t do anything but it was still his fault!
I’m lying on my bed, trying to do my homework now but I just can’t focus. All I can think about was how horrible I was to Payton and how I was going to fix things. I know he wants to take me out and I want to go out too but I can’t reveal my identity to him! I just can’t. Maybe I can wear a disguise…? No! That’s stupid he’d still know it was me. I was interrupted from my thoughts when my mother knocked on the door and walked in, crossing her arms over her chest. Oh god, more yelling. It’s just my lucky day huh?
“Are you forgetting something young lady?” my mother asked.
“Uh…” I looked around the room and shrugged.
“You have patrols tonight. With Payton? The boy you like?” I groaned at the sound of his name and then groaned again when I realized I was doing patrols.
“Alright I’ll get going.”
I automatically ran out of the back door, shifting in mid-air and landing gracefully on my paws. It’s rare that I land gracefully, usually when I shift in mid-air I get a face full of dirt or I sprain my paw. I headed to my post and saw Payton already waiting there, looking pissed off as ever. I think I’m on a roll of pissing people off today. I walked very slowly up to him until a twig snapped under my paw, alerting him and causing him to jump on top of me and snarl. I could have easily pushed him off but I didn’t want to hurt his ego.
Instead I just showed him it’s me and gave him a cheesy grin as if to say ‘my bad’. He got up of me with a growl and sat back at the post, probably cursing the day I was born. I sat beside him and looked out into the trees, trying hard to focus but failing because of the peeks I kept taking at Payton. I wanted to see his facial expression! Was he mad? Was he sad? Was he-?
‘You can stop staring at me.’ Payton said gruffly through our mind link.
I blushed and looked away staring into the trees once more. Well, I wasn’t really blushing since I have fur but if I was a human I’d be red as a tomato by this point. It took another five minutes before I finally worked up the courage to look over at him again but this time he looked right back over at me and I squeaked in surprise, slamming my head into the dirt to hide my face. It was the stupidest thing I could have done, and I probably look ridiculous with my head mashed into the dirt and my butt in the air like a pup.
‘Are you okay’ Payton asked.
I couldn’t see him but I could hear the smirk in his voice. I looked up at him and shook the dirt off, sighing and shaking my head sadly.
‘I’m sorry about yesterday Payton…’ I whimpered.
‘It’s fine.’ He said coldly, looking away.
‘No it’s not! I was a heartless bitch to you and it isn’t fair, I shouldn’t treat you like that no matter how I angry I was.’ I said, loathing myself.
‘Listen, Mystery-‘he said with a sigh as I hung my head low. He’s probably going to say he hates me and doesn’t want to hang out anymore… ‘-the only reason I got so upset is because…’
‘Because why?’ I asked, perking my ears up.
‘Because I thought the only reason you wouldn’t go anywhere with me in human form was because you’d be embarrassed of me there I said it.’ He breathed, looking away shamefully.
It took a minute for his words to sink in but when they did my jaw nearly dropped. He thought…I’d be ashamed…to be seen with him?
‘Why would you think that?’ I asked in shock.
‘I don’t know…I guess it’s just because you have friends in your wolf form who I’m pretty sure know who you are in your human form and I didn’t understand why I couldn’t be one of those friends.’
‘It’s not true though Payton. Yes, some of my friends know, but that’s because I’ve known them since sixth grade and we have a serious bond. I just don’t want to reveal myself to you yet, it has nothing to do with being ashamed of you! If that were the case I wouldn’t have tried so hard to be your friend.’ I said with a small laugh.
‘You’re forgiven, Mystery. But only on one condition…’ he said.
‘Okay…?’
‘I want another hint.’ He said with a smirk.
I rolled my eyes and thought for a minute. I’d need to give him something that wouldn’t reveal myself to him easily. I can’t give him a physical appearance trait because I don’t look like many people in the school and he’d probably catch on immediately…so I decided to be an asshole and give him a hard one.
‘I’m someone you’d never expect.’ I said with a smirk.
‘That’s not a hint! No fair, I want another!’ Payton whined.
‘Well too bad, you said that you wanted a hint not a good hint.’ I puffed my chest out in triumph and gave him a humorous look.
He returned my look with a fake sour one and we both continued to watch out into the woods, making sure no one was coming to attack the pack.

The rest of the night was spent joking around and talking about each other. But too soon, our patrol shift ended and we both had to go home. Payton looked reluctant as he turned and bounded towards his house and I stood there for a moment, watching him disappear into the trees. I was overjoyed that I had made up with him, but…tonight made me realize something. He’s a lot more fragile than I originally thought and this game I’m playing at is a dangerous one.
So it looks like I’m going to have to step it up.
So sorry for not updating guys! I've just been swamped all summer. But don't worry! More updates are coming my lovelies!
