Chapter Twenty:

I landed on the thing and ripped into it’s shoulder, it’s foul tasting blood nearly making me gag. It struggled underneath me, managing to throw me across the room with little hesitation. I looked up to see Payton, staring at me with wide eyes. They held so many emotions in them.

 Betrayal, hurt, fear, confusion, and…love?

I didn’t get any time to question it as the thing came at me again. Okay, if this amulet is supposed to help in any way, it would be great if it started now! I yelped as the creature bit into my side, but I counter attacked by jumping on top of it and ripping into it’s shoulder. I swung my head from side to side and before I knew it, the thing’s arm was laying broken on the floor. It howled in pain, screeching so loud I thought my eardrums would bust. I was going in for the kill, when suddenly I was shoved out of the way.

 Payton was attacking the shape-shifter.

I tried to tell him to move, to run away, or something! But he wasn’t listening!

‘Payton! You’re what it wants! Get out of here!’ I screamed.

‘I’ve go this Calla! You need to get out of here, you’re already hur-‘

The thing picked him up and chucked him into the wall. All I heard was a crack and a whimper…and then silence.

 No….

 No…

 NO!

The thing ran to go and collect Payton’s body but I flung myself at it and ripped it it’s neck. It gargled on it’s own blood and struggled to get me off, ripping it claws into my stomach to try and get me to let go. But I wouldn’t let go. She hurt him…she could have killed him…she’s gonna pay.

There was a sudden sick sound of ripping flesh, and then thing’s head rolled off of it’s shoulders.

The body fell to the ground and dissipated, seeming to travel inside of the amulet hanging around my neck. All that was left of it was it’s detached arm and it’s blood coating the walls and floor. I limped over to Payton, the pain in my stomach excruciating. I saw him lying on the floor underneath the spot where he had hit the wall. I whimpered and nudged him with my nose, smelling the blood coating his fur.

I quickly shifted back to my human form, which was painful, and kneeled beside him. He shifted as well, but he wasn’t awake. I clutched his body in my arms, crying as I did so.

“No, no, no, no….” I cried, rocking him back and forth.

Emily and Zak came up behind me, I could feel their pity. I cried over him and prayed for him to wake up, to do anything.

 “Calla…”

I ignored them and moved the hair from his face.

 “Calla…”

I kissed his lips lightly, biting my lip to keep in a sob.

“Calla…”

“WHAT!?!” I screamed, looking up them.

They gave me a shocked look and stepped back.

“What is it?! Can you just leave me alone!?” I screamed, which turned into a sob.
