Chapter Thirteen:

The next few weeks were…perfect. I can’t find another word to describe it. Payton and I had been spending a lot of time together, not only as Calla but as Mystery as well. I, Emily, and Payton hadn’t found the location of the shape-shifter but we felt like we were close. And not only that but lately I had been seeing more of that she-wolf than I wanted to. She was constantly watching me and flirting with Payton, and I didn’t like it one bit. Not to mention that she seriously gave me the creeps.

Zak and Emily started talking again, she even told him about what we were investigating. Well, sort of. She avoided the topic of me al together so he wouldn’t know my identity. I think that they’re secretly dating, but I can’t be sure. Currently, I’m headed over to Payton’s in my wolf form. He left me a note on my locker, telling me to meet him in the woods. I finally reached our normal spot, but something didn’t feel right. The air seemed a little heavier and I didn’t like the feeling I was getting at all. It was making my hair stand on edge and giving me a feeling of paranoia.

I heard a twig snap and I whipped my head around in that direction.

 ‘P-Payton?’ I asked.

I heard a laugh, but it wasn’t Payton’s. I tried to move but something pushed me onto the ground. I stood up, snarling, but nothing was there. Another laugh echoed from around me.

‘You really are stupid aren’t you?’ the voice taunted.

 ‘Who are you?’ I growled.

‘Do you really think I’d tell you?’

Payton stepped out from behind the trees in his human form, but this wasn’t Payton. Payton’s eyes were a beautiful blue…not a vibrant green.

 Shape-shifter.

‘I’m disappointed, really, I am Calla. You even fell for my little note trick!’ the thing laughed.

That’s when I realized something that I really should have noticed before. If Payton wanted to meet Mystery…then he wouldn’t have left the note on Calla’s locker. This thing knew both of my identities, and it used them against me.

‘Just realizing your stupidity huh? Wow. This is going to be easy.’

‘Leave me, my friends, my pack, and Payton alone!’ I snapped.

It just smiled, moving its hair from its face.

‘You know, I don’t think you realize the power I have over you Calla. Not only do I know both of your identities, but I can shift into anyone. I could shift into Payton and get him into some nasty trouble, I could shift into you, or anyone of your pack members. In fact, here’s an idea-’

The thing suddenly shifted into me. It looked like an exact copy…except for the eyes.

‘How about I use this appearance, kill Payton, and then pin it all on you? Then you’d be gone and so would that annoying little twit. Two birds- well- wolves with one stone!’ it chuckled.

It was so weird hearing my own voice and watching myself.

‘No! W-What do you want?’ I whispered.

The shape-shifter grinned and sighed, looking at its nails dismissively.

‘Well, it’s not much. I just want you to break it off with Payton.’

My heart stopped. It was like time froze and everything was in slow motion. Was this thing insane?!

‘W-What? Why? What are you possibly hoping to gain from this?!’ I screamed.

‘That’s for me to know and you not to. Now do we have a deal? Because if you want, I could just go kill him right now and-‘

 ‘Fine…I-I’ll do it…’ I whispered painfully.

‘Good. I’m glad that you see it my way.’

The thing shifted back into the form of a random wolf and ran off, leaving me stunned.

I loved Payton. There, I admitted it. I loved him so much that it hurt. But if I was going to keep him safe…then I’d have to break it off. At least for now, until I can figure out a plan.

 ***

I walked to Payton’s house in my human form with a heavy heart, tears in my eyes. I didn’t want to do this. But I kept reminding myself that it was best for his safety. I knocked on his door and he answered. He looked bored, until he saw me and his face lit up like a kid’s on Christmas morning. It made my heart break even more to see him so excited and know that I was about to crush that.

“Hey Calla! I was actually just about to call you. I was wondering if-“

“Payton…we need to talk.” I said grimly, looking down at my shoes.

 “Okay…what’s wrong?”

I took a deep, shuddering breath and looked up at him with tears in my eyes. He automatically looked worried and rushed to say something but I cut him off.

“I think that we should break up.”

His face fell and I could practically feel his heart shattering. The look on his face made my heart physically hurt.

 “W-What?” he stuttered out softly.

I took another deep breath and avoided his eyes. If I looked at him again I knew that I would break down, and I couldn’t do that right now.

 “Things aren’t working out. I’m sorry…”

I turned to leave but he grabbed my hand, sending shocks up my arm. He made me face him, tears in his own eyes.

“Calla please! I…I love you!” he proclaimed, staring at me with desperate eyes.

It took everything that I had in me not to throw my arms around him and kiss him on the spot. It took everything I had in me not to breakdown sobbing. I stepped forward, tears cascading down my cheeks, and kissed him gently. It felt like a goodbye kiss…and that’s exactly what it was.

“I love you too Payton…but this can’t happen.”

I whispered those words into his ear and turned around, walking away from his house. He stood there watching me leave, I felt his eyes on me.

I just prayed that he couldn’t see or hear the broken sobs wracking through my body as I walked away from the best thing that had ever happened to me.
