Luke could feel and hear his heart pounding in his head as he ran through the empty hallways. If it weren't for the full moon, he'd probably be freaking out right now, but the moon always gave him the strength and support he needed.
Most of the pupils he knew from school that had the magic of space on their side preferred the sun to the moon but not Luke. When most of his family presumed and hoped for another water tattoo, Luke always knew differently. He was born on a full moon and he felt alive on a full moon.
He rushed to the door and knocked, his knuckles hurting from the strength he put into his movement.
"Come in, Luke."
On every other, day, Luke would blush for being called out. He knew he was the last person and probably the only person who was late for class.
"I'm sorry for being late Mrs. Stillwater," Luke apologized before he even stepped into the class. "I couldn't find my painting in the observatory."
The red-haired professor smiled at Luke and pointed her finger towards his seat.
"I'm sorry Luke, my husband was here and decided to spare you the trip to the observatory and brought your summer homework here. What he obviously forgot was to inform you about it."
The class laughed and Luke sat down, relieved his painting was no longer missing. Just before he sat down he also noticed a fire red hair in the back of the class.
"As I was just saying," The professor continued. "You have until next week to finish and perfect your paintings. For you mister Clifford that means making it from the scratch but I hope that won't be a problem?"
"Not at all."
His voice was smooth and mysterious, Luke thought. He could barely keep himself from turning around to see him but the moon was saving him once again.
"Great. The best one like I've promised will be presented next month at the gala for all the students who just got their tattoos. As for today's class, we'll go through our plans for this year. Like I promised last year, with each year you'll get more freedom over your projects, and each year you'll get to use more and more magic while creating them."
Luke pulled a notebook from his backpack and started writing down every word the professor shared with them. Next to each topic she mentioned, Luke scribbled down ideas that already came to mind.
It was Luke's last class for the day but still, he was sad it was over. Next, to all the obligatory courses, art was his favorite optional subject.
"Luke," Mrs. Stillwater called after him when the sound of raindrops filled the room, announcing the end of the class.
Luke turned back to see not only his professor but also Michael Clifford waiting for him at her desk. Luke walked back trying to not stare at Michael for too long.
"Yes, Mrs. Stillwater?"
"I know it's a lot to ask but Michael needs to finish his assignment in one week. Since he needs a lot of peace to work on it I was thinking you'd let him stay in your studio for the time being."
