Wolf arrived in Paris after only two and a half hours. He thought it was quite impressive. He had never gotten there this fast without breaking any laws. And he had made the trip many, many times.
He turned off the main streets that would have taken him back to the opera house, and went several kilometers down an old dirt road. He saw the large gate rising out of the distance, and parked on the side of the road next to the old plot of land.
Père Lachaise Cemetery.
The deserted second era graveyard had been abandoned for years. Wolf came here at least once a month, and he was sure he was the only person who ever visited it anymore.
He walked past cracked tombstones. Some of the graves had the remnants of flowers left on them. Most of them didn't. Wolf walked past so many people, it would have been hard to count them all. It was so easy to ignore the dead, that every time you did acknowledge the fact that they were gone, it was overwhelming.
He passed row upon row of people, until he reached the very edge of the gravesite. He sat cross legged at the base of a tombstone, the newest by decades. The one he had placed on his same trip to get Scarlet's grandmother.
"Hey. It's me. I was just thinking about you earlier, and Scarlet was talking with Winter and I just... I needed somewhere to be."
There was no reply. He knew there wouldn't be, yet the graveyard had a certain air in it, a feel like anything could happen.
Wolf propped his elbow on his knee and his head on his hand. "It's weird. I'm still not used to you being the one I talk to. But Scarlet has been a little distant lately, and I don't know why."
"We have never once doubted that we were each other's alpha's, but I think she's looking for something more. I just don't know what. I can't explain it. I don't have anything else to offer her."
"She says that she wants to have Winter live with us for a while, I agree. She says she wants to not have kids, we don't have kids. And you know I want kids." Wolf laughed, a dry and disinterested sound.
"You wouldn't understand. You never had the chance to find a mate. I pity you for that. You could have had love. But maybe you wouldn't have deserved it."
"I understand that you were picked on by Brock and that you turned bitter, but maybe it was your fault. You didn't have to do it. You didn't need to hurt my mate to feel like you were worth something. Like you were better than me. Like you were alpha."
Wolf folded his hands in his lap, staring intently at the plot of dirt. He clenched his fists so tight that he felt his nails pierce the skin. It stung, but not in the bad way. Tears pricked his eyes.
"I hate you. I hope you know that. I would have killed you so many times if it meant saving her once. I would. But I wish I didn't need to."
"I don't even know if you knew what you wanted with her. And I am so grateful that I will never find out. You should have left her alone. You shouldn't have gone near her. You knew I'd kill you. Is that what you wanted?" Wolf sighed, putting his head in his hands.
"I thought this was a good idea, coming back here. Maybe I was wrong. I should probably stop coming, right? You don't want my pity. You don't want anything to do with me."
Wolf stood, brushing off the seat of his pants as he did. He placed one hand on the top of the tombstone. "I'll see you later, brother."
Wolf pulled back his hand and began the long trek back to the hover. As he walked he rubbed his eyes, trying to wipe away his tears before they hit the ground.
