I walked downstairs to find that Skylar wasn't in the house and I began to panic. I wondered where she could've gone and I really hoped it wasn't to see Jake. I paced around the apartment in a frenzy trying to think of what to do when I looked out our expansive windows and saw her sitting out on the beach. I let out the breath I had been holding, slipped on my flip flops and walked out to join her.
"Hey, Skye."
She jumped at my voice. "You scared me," she placed a hand to her chest.
I took a seat in the sand. It was a warm, since it was really hot today but I liked the feel of it on my skin. "Come out here to think?'
She nodded. "Yeah. I think the ocean and fresh air helps." I wanted so badly to ask her if she had come to any conclusion about Jake and Drew, but I knew that would crossing the line in a way. "I think I need to see Jake again, Noelle. I'm going to go to his hotel. I know you think it's wrong and that I shouldn't be with him, but I need to see once and for all if I still have feelings for him."
I nodded. "Ok." I knew I shouldn't judge her for anything. She has helped me through so much and really she gave up her relationship with Jake for me. "Do you know where he's staying?"
"Yeah, he told me yesterday."
"Do you need me to go with you? I'll stay outside," I offered.
"No. I'll be ok. I need to do this on my own."
"Alright. Just call me if you need anything."
"Thanks Noelle." She wrapped her arms around me in a hug.
**********
"She's going to be here later, ok? She just had to run an errand." Drew showed up to our house, demanding to know what was going on with Skylar. I told him he could stay until she got here since I had gotten a text from her not too long ago letting me know that she had broken things off with Jake for good but she wanted to take a walk to clear her head before coming home.
"Fine," he brushed past me and walked into the kitchen, opening up the fridge. "You guys have nothing to eat!" he groaned, slamming it shut. I rolled my eyes and texted Skylar that Drew showed up. It was getting late, so I was also starting to worry about her.
I joined Drew in the living room and found the atmosphere very awkward. My ringtone blared out in the silence of the room and I scrambled to answer it, hoping that it was Skylar. "Hello?" I answered without checking caller I.D.
"Hey, Elle. What are you up to?"
"Oh, hey Keaton. Just sitting with Drew. He's waiting for Skylar to get back home."
"Do you want me to come over? My shift just got done. I was gonna see if you wanted to catch a movie, but if Drew's there..."
"Sure, that's fine. I'll see you in a bit." I wasn't sure why, but it was reassuring to know that Keaton was going to be over soon. Drew had turned on the TV to some sports channel while I had been on the phone and I decided to watch even though I wasn't that into it. A bit later there was a knock at the door, which was weird, because Keaton had learned to just walk in now. I thought Drew might jump up to get it becuase he might think it was Skylar, but then again why would she knock either? I sighed and got up a moment later, deja vu coming over me when I opened the door to find Jake. He was supporting himself on the door frame with one of his arms. His eyes were drooping a bit, so they looked almost closed.
"Hey Noelle," he slurred. Great. He was drunk.
"Jake, you need to leave," I said as sternly as I could, folding my arms across my chest.
He didn't listen to me and pushed past me right into the house. "No. I'm not leaving until I talk to Skylar again! She can't just break up with me!"
I threw my head back in frustration and rushed after him. "She's not even here," I grabbed onto his arm, dragging him into the kitchen right before he went into the living room where Drew was still watching TV. I wanted to do everything to prevent them seeing each other.
"Then where is she?" he pressed me for an answer. "She left me two hours ago," his words were barely understandable. I wondered how much he had to drink and how even made it here. I helped him get to a chair at the kitchen table and sit down. He laid his head down and I thought he might fall asleep.
I heard Keaton greeting Drew in the living room and then his feet padding toward the kitchen. Jake's head popped up at the sound. "Is this him? Is this who she's dumping me for?" He stood up, stumbling over the chair leg. Keaton held his arms up, presenting himself as an innocent party.
I shook my head. "This is my boyfriend Keaton," I explained.
"If I ever see that guy, I'm gonna kill 'em," Jake practically growled, sitting back at the table.
My eyes widened and I pulled Keaton to the side. "Oh my god! What are we going to do?"
"How did he even get in here?" he held his arm out to Jake, who was now back to his almost sleeping position.
"He barged in and I couldn't stop him. I got him to come in the kitchen at least so he hasn't seen Drew, but I have no idea where Skylar is. I guess she broke things off with him for good so he's upset and drunk, obviously."
"Well, let's hope that Drew stays-"
"What the hell is going on in here?" Drew demanded, coming into the kitchen loudly and startling Jake. He fell from his chair and struggled to get up. I covered my mouth, trying my hardest not to laugh but in all honesty I liked seeing Jake suffer.
"If that's not him, then this must be him." Jake pointed from Keaton to Drew, putting the pieces together in his head. I bit my lip, afraid of what was coming. Jake made his way toward Drew and grabbed a fistful of his shirt. His arm wound up behind him ready to punch him.
Drew gave him a stern look. "I don't know who you are man, but that's not a good idea." He caught Jake's fist in his hand, causing Jake to back away a few steps.
"You can't steal her away from me," Jake's words were slurred more than before as he tried to punch Drew again. Keaton moved to intervene and pulled Jake away.
Drew's breathing was starting to escalate and I could tell he wanted to hit Jake, but he held himself back. "Someone needs to tell me what's going on and who this guy is," he said through his teeth.
"Just calm down, please?" I begged. Drew shook his arms, pacing around the island counter. "Jake is Skylar's ex from Rhode Island and he just showed up yesterday. He came looking for her now because he's upset that she told him that there's no chance they're getting back together."
"And where is Skylar?" he narrowed his eyes into slits.
"I don't know..." I trailed off. I checked my phone to see if I had a text from her, but there were no new messages. It was after 10:00. Where the hell was she?
