Chapter 2
"Beep, beep" "beep, beep" I let it beep a few more times before getting up.
"Oh, shut up!" I complained, sitting up in my bed and rubbing my forehead.
I pushed the OFF on my alarm and I was out of bed in a couple of seconds. Today was Saturday which meant that I was going to Elizabeth's, also known as Liz.
I brushed my messy hair and put it in a quick messy bun, the lighter tips appearing. It was about 8:12 am by the time I was done getting ready, it was now the hardest part of Saturday, waking up my parents. They always seemed to say " Yah,yah be there in a sec." They wouldn't be lying if a sec was 10 MINUTES, I always had to go to their room multiple times before they got up.
I brought my legs up the stairs and to my parents bedroom. Opening their door slightly, I found my mom and dad accompanied by my dog , on the fluffy dark red blankets. He laid on one of the yellow flower prints. Since dad was the one taking me today, I decided to wake him and only him up.
" Dad, dad wake up, I'm ready to go to Liz's. "
******
After a couple minutes of impatience, my dad finally woke up. Looking very tired, dark circles outlined his eyes. He got ready, checked a few emails and we were ready to go. I hopped in the big blue truck, my mom and brother were still sleeping, so I didn't bother to say bye. My dad turned up the music and we were off to go.
"K bye, see you later, love you, I will text when I need a ride home!" I yelled to my dad as the wind blew in my ear and I tried to close the door. " K, have fun sweetie." he replied.
I walked up to Liz's door step, pushing me legs through the deep snow. Before I could reach the top step, she stepped out with a old margarine bowl full of dog food. She placed her mud- covered glove on the " I can't believe its not butter " logo, leaving only part of the sentence visible.
" You all set?" she asked, her coat covered part of her mouth, causing her voice to sound muffled.
" Yep, it's chilly thought."
We had a little conversation on the way to the barn, but the usual.
As Liz opened the icy barn door, I peeked through impatiently, little pieces of ice fell on my head, escalading down my hood. I saw the 4 horses that were kept indoors and at the corner of my eye I spotted something unusual. One of the mini's stalls were empty. To that, the smile on my face dropped.
" What's wrong Eva?" She walked into the lightly lite barn. I looked up to see her look into my eyes with a look of sadness. She knew what I was going to ask, but I did anyways, " Where's Bionca?"
" She left yesterday, her old owner came to pick her up." she said with a tear streaming down her face, slowly making its way to her chin. The water-like droplet looking like a crystal from the light.
"Oh , it's ok" I said trying to comfort her.
Although Bionca stayed with the minis she was not a miniature horse, she was a big black Shetland pony, with the mane of a zebra , she had a big long beautiful black tail and when you had her saddled up it was like you were sitting on a big ball, she was so fat. She was so good she did everything. My friend and I that I met at the barn, taught her how to jump.
" Well, why don't we get to work" I added regretting even asking anything.
*****
We mucked out stalls, gave the horses hay and water and swept the aisle.
"Can you go check on the troths outside?" Liz asked. I did as she told me and went and checked on them.
The wind was blowing in my face, the snow landing in my eyes and my face felt as if it was going to freeze. ' Why would he take Bionca, she was the best, I loved her' the thought took over my mind.
I made sure to check on Sakoia and the troths. Sakoia was supposed to go into labor soon, so I made sure to see if she was okay. I checked on the dirty troth, the brown-like water being about 3/4 full. The red ream around the heater indicated it was still working. Now I have to check on Sakoia. She was all the way at the back of the paddock, with all of the snow I could only see a spot, which seemed to be laying down, I had to be sure.
I opened the gate, little peaces of ice breaking off the hook. I walked in the paddock, hearing the ' click, click' of the electric fence fade.
After pushing myself against the wind, I made it close enough to Sakoia to see that she was laying down. I didn't know if that was normal for a pregnant horse, so I decided to go ask Liz. As I turned around, I heard a horse yelp and yell until I realized it was Sakoia!
I turned as fast as I could, I had no clue what to do, I had never seen a pregnant horse other then on t.v. My heart started pounding harder and harder until it felt as if it was going to pop out of my chest. As I stood there puzzled, not doing anything, I heard a voice in my head scream " what, are you stupid, do something, that foal might die!!" I listened to the voice in my head, I had finally realized I had to do something. I shook my head and ran to get help.
Running in the snow was hard but that seemed to lose it self in your thoughts when you needed help. I ran so fast, it was unbelievable what this situation could do to your legs. Not watching where I was going, I stepped in a small rot, falling flat on my face. I didn't have time to think about the freezing sensation on my face before I picked my self up and continued running. The barn was getting close, I could almost see it.
When I got to the barn, it felled as if, I had only one breath left. My lungs burning and searching for air, I ran in searching for Liz. The second I saw her in the tack room, placing a saddle on a rack. The words just came out of my mouth without any thought.
"Help... she having... her baby...!!" I tried to catch my breath one more time but it was fine Liz knew exactly what I meant.
I've never seen Liz run that fast. Snow flew out from behind her boot, her breath showing in air. I grabbed my phone and ran out, catching up with Liz.
********
This was so magnificent, right before my eyes a foal was being born. How many times in your life would you be able to see that? And then and there my day turned around. I was no longer sad about Bionca but happy for Sakoia.
