Niall's POV

"But Mum, please. I just want to see my baby sister. Tell her to visit me... just this once."

I pressed the phone tighter to my ear as I paced around my room.

For the past week, Mum had been giving me excuse after excuse.

Christine is busy.
Christine has plans.
Christine isn't feeling well.

Honestly? Rubbish.

My sister was many things—stubborn, dramatic, impossible—but busy was rarely one of them.

And Mum wasn't helping either.

"Oh, alright then," Mum sighed dramatically through the phone. "I'll persuade her for you, my little Irish baby boy."

I groaned. "Mum, stop calling me that."

She ignored me completely.

"I miss you, sweetheart. Anyway, I have to go pack my things. Your father and I are leaving soon."

I froze.

"Wait... what do you mean leaving?"

I heard rustling on the other side, then Mum whispering something to Dad. Probably laughing. Those two flirted like teenagers even after all these years.

"Oh! I forgot to tell you," she said brightly. "Your dad and I are going on a seven-month holiday in Hawaii."

I nearly choked.

"A what?"

"A holiday," she repeated cheerfully. "We've both been busy with business matters. We deserve a break."

"Mum!" I shouted. "What about Christine? What about Greg? You're just leaving them there?"

"Oh, don't be silly."

"I'm serious! What if someone murders them? What if they starve? What if Christine burns the house down trying to make toast?"

"She never learned how to use the toaster properly," Mum muttered thoughtfully.

"Mum!"

She laughed.

"Relax, darling. Christine will stay at her best friend Clifford Lee's house while we're away."

I stopped pacing.

"She'll be what?"

"At Clifford's house."

"For seven months?"

"Yes."

"With a boy?"

"Yes."

"Alone?"

"Well, not if Clifford is there."

I dragged a hand down my face.

Sometimes I wondered if my family had been personally designed to stress me out.

"And Greg?" I asked.

"Your brother is busy with work and his girlfriend, as usual."

Of course he was.

Greg ran a company. Christine disappeared whenever she pleased. Mum and Dad were running off to Hawaii for nearly a year.

And me?

I was stuck being the only normal one.

"Fine," I muttered. "Have fun on your romantic island escape."
