Recommended song: Fall in Love by Phantogram
Rin opened her eyes to the pine canopy above, and looked at her lord- but he wasn't there. He was no longer hovering over her, it was no longer nighttime. Confused and slightly scared, she sat straight up and glanced around.
Sesshomaru was sitting against a nearby tree, sharpening his sword. The sun was shining through the trees, birds were singing cheerfully. He did not look up, and Rin was grateful for that, since she could hardly conceal the heartbreak on her face. It was all a dream? All of that wasn't real...?
Rin placed her hands over her face and began to softly sob. What an evil world. She tried to keep her crying silent, but she knew he would notice no matter what she did. And this fact only made her cry harder.
"Rin...?" Her lord called to her, but she was too embarrassed to respond right away. Slowly, she removed her tearful hands from her face, and directed her eyes towards him. He had rested his sword on his lap, and was now looking straight at her.
"What's wrong, Rin?" He said flatly, brow slightly furrowed.
Recalling these were the same words he purred to her in the dream, she began crying once again. She couldn't help herself, her disappointment was too much to handle. She was so tired of all this.
Drawing her knees up to her chest, she felt the breeze brush the backs of her legs. She placed her head down onto her knees and tried to calm her disjointed breathing.
The woods were quiet for a moment. She then heard a faint clink of metal and assumed Sesshomaru had gone back to sharpening. The wind whistled through the trees, and this time it brushed her upper arm.
"Even the breeze touches me more than him," Rin thought dejectedly. However, her upper arm now had a warm spot on it. Confused, she lifted her head to see a hand slowly rubbing her arm, soothingly. Her Lord was now sat at her side, looking directly at her.
Rin was taken aback. She had cried a few times before in front of him, so why did he drop what he was doing to comfort her now? She was too strung out to notice she had been staring back at him for a while. Her eyes had once again filled with tears, now on the verge of spilling. He frowned as he watched her eyes pool.
He then decided to rub her other arm, which required his arm to slip around her slim shoulders. Now being cradled, Rin felt almost paralyzed. She allowed herself to be consoled, although her crying was now just faint sniffs. She leaned into him, her head on his chest. She could hear his heartbeat like this. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, she wanted to stay like this.
"Was it a nightmare?" She could hear his words rumble in his chest.
"Yes, it was an evil dream." She murmured softly into his kimono.
He squeezed her a tiny bit tighter, and then there was a pressure on the top of her head. He inhaled deeply. Rin was surprised, and giggled softly.
"My Lord, why are you sniffing me?" She asked, bemused.
"Your scent has changed." He muttered against her hair.
She internally began to worry. What did he mean? She felt him tense up, and lifted her head to look at him. He was breathing deeply, face inclined into the air.
"What's wrong?" She asked, worried.
"A demon approaches." He stated, frowning.
Her heart sunk, this would mean he must leave. He untwined himself from her, stood, and gathered his swords. She watched as he wordlessly left, his warmth slowly melting away.
After he had gone, Rin laid back down and tried to nap. She would've felt safer with Jaken there, even though the toad demon did little more than snore. She sighed and pulled a blanket up to her chin, and fell asleep thinking of her Lords return.
