Sesshomaru woke with Rin draped on him, her breathing shallow and relaxed. He brushed her hair out of her face and tried to remember what he had dreamt of. It began to come back to him, the recollection of how he met Rin. He remembered the feeling of being so close to death clearly. The fear in his heart that he had never quite experienced before, due to his extensive knowledge and practice on the battlefield, he had never lost a fight so badly like that day. But for some reason, that day during his fight with a shape shifting female demon, he got severely injured.

He remembered with disgust how he had let his guard down slightly with the wench, only to be viciously attacked and nearly killed. It was one of the only times he had turned and retreated rather than stay and fight. Some nights, he still thought about her, wondering what other Lords had fell victim to her. He had no feelings for the demon, but had she not attacked him, things might have gone somewhere. In a twist of fate, he felt grateful that she had nearly killed him. He had avoided a major pitfall of settling down with a demon like her, and instead recuperated against the base of a large tree.

Fading in and out of consciousness, he remembered how vulnerable he felt. It was uncomfortable to remember, and he felt foolish for leaving Jaken behind that day. Even his supernatural speed of demon healing was not fast enough to close the wounds that covered his body, and although he had not enough strength to fight, he was on high alert constantly. And then, out of the forest a twig snapped and a bush rustled. Sesshomaru remembered the way he flashed to demon mode without any control, and then the rush of adrenaline, shame, and shock when he realized it was only a small human girl.

In his realization, he switched back to his humanoid form, the jagged red and purple demon markings reverting back to normal. He remembered in his delirium and weakness how the only thought left in his mind was "why is this child getting close to me?" As she edged nearer, he could tell by her body language that she was aware of his potential danger, but nonetheless continued to offer him food and water on large leaf plates. To this day, he had no idea how she found him, but always figured it was during her foraging for food that she stumbled upon him.

Thinking back, he realized that in that moment they were both extremely vulnerable. It scared him to think about little Rin wandering the woods alone. He realized, if he had been any other demon, worse things may have befallen her. Rin never talked about her younger days to him. Sometimes he would catch her staring off in space, or a thought flicker across her mind and a slightly pained look pass on her face.

He never inquired, both because he did not want to upset her and he did not want to know what happened before he was around to protect her. It would only serve to enrage him, and those types of things were better left in the past. Besides, he had his own secrets that he kept from her. She had no clue that she was the first person he had ever been with, human or demon. He had remained celibate intentionally, practicing stoicism and looking after his land. He had never encountered someone he deemed worthy of sharing himself with before her.

He enjoyed occasionally remembering their first encounter, because of how Rin did not stop coming to look after him. Even when he told her her efforts could not help him, she still tried, and it moved something deep within him. After he had recovered, and she continued to follow his trail, he thought nothing more of it than a child that needed to feel safe. He thought she was using him for his protection, and his stoic mentality caused him to not look after her closer. And then, he remembered the terrible image of Rin's little body splayed out, dead and mauled. He winced and stopped remembering. The rest of their story was history.

Rin stirred next to him, and he looked down at her. She looked up, and snugged onto him, yawning. He kissed the top of her head, stroking her arm in a comforting way.

"Good morning, Rin." He said.

She met his gaze, "Good morning, m'love--" her speech cut off, and her face tensed.

He was about to ask what was wrong, but she jumped up and clutched her stomach, running to the bathroom. He sat up, then hearing her puke in the other room. He could not recall her ever falling ill, other than one occasion where she had a fever that broke quickly. He walked slowly to the bathroom, watching as she rinsed her mouth out and turned to him. He held his arms out silently and she returned to him.

"I think it's the baby." She muttered into him. He looked in the mirror of the bathroom at the two of them embracing, and saw that her stomach looked the tiniest bit bloated. He realized that this was the very beginning of their pup growing inside her, and for the first time in a long time, he felt both excited and elated.

She looked up at him, and he felt a softness come over him. He kissed her on the mouth, tenderly, slowly, over and over. Rin couldn't help but to smile and closed her eyes as she allowed him to adorn her with kisses. He noticed her face had a certain new radiance to it, and he knew what it was from. He dropped to his knees and placed a few kisses on her stomach, Rin giggled at this and was taken aback. She had never thought in a million years he would ever express his affection in this way. The kisses felt good and she blushed at his celebration.

She still felt gross after vomiting, but this was in stark contrast against the way he seemed to worship her body and new motherhood. He straightened again and led her by the hand back into their room, where they got dressed and headed down the staircase. As they descended to the ground floor, Sesshomaru told Rin he would get some herbs to help with her nausea. She smiled at him and agreed gratefully. She had never quite felt so cared for, safe, and loved.
