"I'm telling you, we don't have enough money to send her to school!" My dad shouted.
"Then what do you want to do?! She needs an education!" My mum was infuriated.
"Home schooling!"
"And who do you suppose is going to teach her?! You?!"
"I don't have the fucking time! How about you do something for once?! Make yourself useful for god's sake!"
"ME?! YOU THINK I HAVE THE TIME?! I HAVE 4 FUCKING JOBS! DON'T PREACH TO ME ABOUT TIME! I'M THE ONE WHO MAKES THE MONEY IN THIS HOUSE!"
"BITCH, I HAVE 5!"
"DID YOU JUST CALL ME A BITCH?! I'LL SHOW YOU A MOTHER FUCKING BITCH!!" She screamed as she launched herself at my dad. I sat in the corner and screamed as they tore at each other clothes.
"STOP!! STOP!!!" I screamed with tears streaming down my cheeks, but they didn't listen. I wedged myself between them and tried to pry them apart, but it didn't work. I was only 13, I was nowhere near as strong as them.
"I'LL STOP GOING TO SCHOOL!!! JUST STOP!!!!!" I screamed as loud as I could.
"GET OUT OF THE WAY, Y/N!!!" My dad pushed me to the floor roughly. "I'LL KILL YOU!!" He screamed at my mum as he grabbed her hair.
"NO!!! STOP!!!! LISTEN TO ME!!!!!"
"AARRRGGGGHHHH!!!!" My mum was thrown into the table, making it snap in half. "LOOK AT WHAT YOU FUCKING DID!!!" My dad screamed. "THAT WAS $100!!!!!"
"I'LL KILL MYSELF!!!!!!!!!" I screamed desperately. They both stopped and looked at me in shock.
"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?!" My mum shouted angrily through tears.
"I don't want you wasting money on me anymore... I'm a waste of effort. It's not like I can help you in any way expect for ceasing to exist.." I sobbed.
"SHUT THE HELL UP, Y/N!!! I DON'T WANT TO HEAR YOUR BULLSHIT!!!" My dad shouted at me. I stood up and walked over to the door.
"I'll come back when I can help you.." I whispered shakily.
"Y/N! GET BACK HERE!" I could hear my mum screaming my name as I closed the door behind me.
I roamed the streets alone at night and hid at day. I knew that people were searching for me, but I also knew that I just caused trouble for my parents. I was a waste of money and if running away meant that I could help them live better, then that's what I was willing to do. I stole a mask, hoodie and cap and stayed in the shadows. I lived off scraps people had thrown away and if I was desperate, stolen food. It remained like that for 7 years until someone stumbled upon me.
"Excuse me, what's your name?" The woman asked softly.
"My name... My name is.... I can't remember. Why can't I remember?" After 7 years of isolation, I had forgotten my own name.
"How old are you?"
"20."
"20? And you're stuck out here like this?" I nodded weakly. "Do you have a job?" I shook my head. She offered me a job at her restaurant down the road and I gladly accepted. I jumped up and shook her hand wildly.
"Thank you! Thank you so much!" She smiled sadly.
"I can't pay you much..."
"Anything is fine."
I started by washing the dishes, then was upgraded to a waitress. I got minimum wage because the restaurant didn't get too many customers, but it was enough for me to buy myself food. I lived at the restaurant because I had nowhere else to go and I didn't have enough money to help my parents yet. I had been working under her for a year when I worked up the courage to ask her what I had wanted to ask for months.
"Jaeun unnie.. Can I try cooking something?" I asked nervously.
"You know how to cook?" She asked, wiping down the tables.
"I used to.. I just want to see if I remember." I used to have to do all the chores in the house because my parents were always busy with work.
"Okay, but I'll be watching so that you don't burn down the kitchen." She joked.
I remembered a stir fry that I had invented years ago and it didn't taste too bad. It was all just ingredients I had found at home and thrown together, but it worked. Once I made 2 servings, I placed them on a table and we ate it together.
"This is good.. Can I sell this?" She looked up at me with a serious expression. "If we just tweak with it a bit, it'll be perfect!"
"Wait, are you being serious?"
"Yes! Completely!"
"Really? You think people would like it?" I couldn't help, but smile.
"We can call it our Original Beef Stir-Fry. I'll put a sign outside and everything!" I laughed in excitement. 'Maybe we can get more customers.'
"But like you said, we should change it up a little first." She nodded excitedly as she continued to eat. We discussed what to add in and what to take out and tried the dish again.
We grinned brightly at each other. "It's perfect. I'll make a sign and it'll be on sale in a few days." She said, holding my hands tightly.
From then on, customers started to flow in as I made more and more recipes. I widened my range to desserts, beverages and some of my recipes didn't fit in any categories. They were so weird and unique that I didn't even know what to call them!
One day, a customer I never expected walked in...
