Chapter 20

Three Years Later

The city of New York has awaken but then again it never sleeps. The streets are packed with traffic, hundreds of people walk the sidewalks with a cup of coffee in one hand and a cellphone to their ear in the other one. The city is full of noise with people always going somewhere. I can't help but look at as many faces as I can, it's so interesting to watch people especially when they don't know they are being watched. It is then that you get to see who they really are, what's really underneath.

"I honestly do not understand what you stare at out this damn window every morning. It's like it holds the secret to life itself", Elvis says from behind me, interrupting my thoughts.

I smile as I continue to stare out the window and down at the street.

"Someone once taught me that there is more than what the naked eye sees", I reply with the same answer I have always given him.

"You always say that and for the thousandth time, I'm going to look out to try and see that but only people rushing to work like animals and yelling at others to move out of their way because last night was rather exciting and now they are paying for it, hence the extra large coffee cup in their hands", he says standing beside me now.

"Maybe one day you will understand", I answer still looking down.

"Maybe or maybe I'm just not weird like you", he says walking away with a teasing tone as I hear him shuffling through papers. He knows he shouldn't ask anymore questions or say anything else so he uses humor to lighten the situation.

I finally tear my eyes away from the window and turn around to face him. I find Elvis with papers in his hands and his blue eyes staring back at mine. I offer him a smile before reaching for the papers, he offers me a smile back.

"What's on today's agenda?", I ask him looking through the papers.

"Well, there's several digital articles ready for you to approve so they can be uploaded to our website. The photography department is also waiting on you to approve photos for the fashion department. And according to your secretary, you have three calls from that singer you have been wanting to have for the magazine cover in two weeks", he says as handing me a separate piece of paper.

"Right, I need to call her immediately. Her new single came out two days ago and it's definitely going to be a summer hit. She is perfect for one of the summer covers", I answer as I jot down to call her as soon as possible on a sticky note.

"Oh, also, I know that we have looked side to side, up and down all over New York trying to find the owner of the property next door with no luck. I have good news for you", he says taking a seat across from me.

"Hmm, really?", I ask him as I take the coffee cup in front of me that he has brought me like always.

"Yes. Somehow Trevor knows the person that owns it. He told me that the owner has no plans in selling it but perhaps you could convince him. Your chance is at this convention he's going to be in this week actually. Trevor says that perhaps if he saw you there, maybe you could have a chance", he tells me showing me a flyer for the convention.

"Business convention?", I ask as I look at it, it hardly has any information on it.

"Yes, it's open for the public and it's supposed to inspire you to start your business or something like that. And they talk about how they got to where they are at, there's some millionaires going in so hey, I'm all in", he says laughing.
