Chapter 29

I stare at Malik, as he looks down briefly at the ground before he looks up at me again. There's a soft look about his eyes and I sense that him recalling everything that has happened to him over the last three years has affected him. I sigh and look down, we haven't had it easy in the time that has gone by. I feel like I'm getting a headache at the thought of what he must have felt like being all alone and how I was lucky to have at least Elvis. To think it all happened because of two letters that weren't even written by us, makes me angry all of a sudden. I look up to meet his eyes when I feel his hand on top of mine.

"It's over now", he says still managing to give me a small smile after everything.

"It's over now", I repeat nodding and try to push away the feelings I'm getting right now.

He nods and removes his hand from mine as we look away from each other to look at the view in front of us instead. We fall into a silence that feels right because there really isn't anything else to say or perhaps we shouldn't say no more. I have a feeling we could both go off if we continue to talk about it but I don't think neither of us want that anymore. We sit in silence for what feels like ten or fifteen minutes until he clears his throat and speaks again.

"So, do you think that Navarrete had anything to do with the clothes?", he asks looking over at me.

"I'm not sure. I mean, I think of what happened and he is the only one that comes to my mind. He has been... Trying to buy the magazine from me since I became the owner of it but something I didn't tell you earlier was that he also made it impossible for me to sell it, a certain amount of time has to go by before I can sell it if I was to or even to put it in someone else's name, like children or something. Navarrete doesn't understand that so he has been insisting so hard. I honestly never thought he would do something like this but from the last two times I encountered him, he seemed like he didn't care what he had to do to get it. Yet, I can't just blame it on him with no evidence", I say finishing with a sigh, I'm tired of this situation with Navarrete.

"Whoever it was, sooner or later we will find out. I'm sure there's something that we overlooked in the camera footage. We were just concerned with the situation at hand which by the way, what exactly is this show about? What is it for?", Malik asks.

"Uncle Aaron joined the second year after the magazine opened. It's where all fashion magazines that are based in New York and around the state can enter to create a line of clothes whether it's original or bought pieces. The whole point iis to assemble looks for the readers to wear. You can a theme and create your own slogan. There are judges, so whichever line they like the best wins. There's always an amount of money given to the magazine's chosen charity or organization. We always donate it to an organization for the prevention of domestic abuse. It's not for the price of what magazine is better but for getting more money to donate to the organization but Navarrete has made it into a real competition", I explain to him.

"I'm glad all this sewing has been for a good cause then", he says with a short laugh and I join him.

"Trust me, I would not had sewn or made my employees sew for a piece of metal", I say with a laugh.

"You always did like getting those though, back in high school", he says looking down at me and I glare at him. "I'm just kidding", he says taking it back.
