Eve Harper hasn't had it easy in life, but with her small family and friends who'd do anything for each other, she's pretty content.
She hopes everything has blown over and her and her friends will finally be safe. But then a new, mysteriously annoy...
The only good thing about being ill is the fact that I can curl up in my bed all day and pretend that the outside world doesn't exist.
This is the third day I've called in sick to work and I never miss a shift.
Max pops his head around the door.
"I'm taking Benji to his doctors appointment in five minutes." He lets me know and I groan in response. "Do you need anything?"
I shake my heavy head slowly, knowing I'd start coughing if I try to talk.
"Ok text me if you do." He gives me a sympathy smile and then shuts my door.
I shudder, my burning fever suddenly replaced by waves of nausea and cold. Burying myself in the covers I try to escape the feeling. I hate being ill.
It's rare for me to be sick. Mere colds and minor illnesses seem to wash over me. When something sweeps round schools I manage to avoid it. But when I do catch something it seriously drags me down.
The nausea isn't leaving and I feel my stomach churn. Regretfully I drag myself out of bed, just making it to the bathroom in the hall. I collapse around the toilet and heave my guts up.
Yucky.
After what feels like forever the horrid feeling passes, I stop retching and flush the toilet. Exhausted, I can't be bothered to try and get back to my room and simply fall asleep on the bathroom floor.
~~~
I don't know how long it slept for but when I wake it's dark, suggesting I'd been out of it all day. Groggily I push myself into a seated position. Wait...how did I get onto my bed?
Rubbing the sleep from my eyes I take in the dark surroundings of my room. As far as I remembered I fell asleep in the bathroom.
Frowning in confusion, I yawn and then cringe, realising how disgusting my mouth tasted. I brush my teeth, shower and change into one of Lucas's hoodies and a pair of leggings. Feeling much better and comfy as fuck I finally feel ready to grace my brothers with my presence.
It's only nine o'clock so no doubt the boys will be up.
As I make my way downstairs I realize there are adults talking. Straight away I recognise Lucas's voice.
"You're drunk man, I can't believe you'd say that about your little brothers nurse!" Lucas snorts with laughter and I enter the living room just as Max is about to reply.
"What's my brother saying about poor Tara?" I question in amusement, voice still a bit scratchy.
The lads are clearly having some fun. Harvey, AJ, Lucas and my big brother are all sat around the table, a stack of cards being shuffled by AJ.
"Your brother has the hots for that nurse." Harvey smirks, taking a swig of his beer as I make my way over to Lucas and end up sat on his lap. I notice that it's not just beer they've been drinking, although Luc seems rather sober.
"Oh really?" I raise my eyebrows at Max who's the drunkest of the lot.
"Noo I never said that!" He throws his arms in the air, almost knocking AJ off the sofa.
"I distinctly remember you saying that 'you find it sooo hard to keep it in your pants around her, especially with that nurse uniform she wears.'" Lucas quotes and I cringe as Max's cheeks redden.
"Too much info."
The guys fall about laughing and I just roll my eyes. Secretly I'm glad Max is showing interest in someone because he hasn't had a proper girlfriend in years. Our little brothers nurse is not the ideal candidate for a partner but at least he's looking. "You feeling better?" Lucas asks softly in my ear as the others carry on their own conversation. "Last time I saw you you were wrapped around the toilet."
Oh, that explains why I woke up in my bed. Lucas must have found me and moved me.
"Sorry you had to witness that, but yeah I'm feeling better thanks." I confirm, his relief matching my own. I definitely hate being ill. "Where's Benji?"
"At a friend's house." He explains, arms tightening around my waist so I don't fall off and I wrap my arm over his shoulder, resting my head against him. "Tara is with him and says they'll be back at 9.30pm."
"That's in like 15mins." I guess, wondering why they're all still drinking themselves silly when Benji is going to be home soon.
"Yeah I told them that. Hence why I'm staying sober." Lucas smiles and my heart flutters as he presses his lips against my forehead in a soft kiss. "They're all staying over in the living room and I've set up beds in Benji's upstairs room for him and I to stay in. I didn't think you'd want him sleeping down here with all the drunk idiots."
Why is he so perfect?? What did I do to deserve such a thoughtful boyfriend?
"You are amazing." I breathe, taken aback yet again by my boyfriend's kindness.
He knows that Benji normally sleeps in the living room because it's much easier than carrying him upstairs every night. The caring guy he is, he'd arranged the evening to fit around my brothers disability.
"I love you."
"I love you too." Lucas glanced over at the drunk Max, fondness in his eyes. "and I love the family you've let me become part of. Blood is not what makes a family, it's how you treat each other. The friends that took me in a stood by me in my darkest moments, they're my family. And you, Eve Harper, you are my everything."
