“Can I help you?” I look up and see Ethan. I swear my heart stopped for that split second and started up again, racing in my chest. He looked at me with a blank expression. I can’t help but stare at him. I want to remember every crevice of his face even if he does look worn out. His blue eyes arent very clear and the whites of his eyes look sort of red.
His hair was smoothed back with plenty of moisture still dripping from the tips and slightly curled under his ear. He looks like those boys from the ‘50s with the tan and the natural golden blond hair. He looks like a Hollister model in the flesh. Its one of the reasons Elizabeth let herself be courted by him.
At that moment I realized plenty of things. One of them being that I understand what happened with my mom and my father. My mom said that she fell in love with my father the first time she laid her eyes on him. No matter how much of a nerd my father was; my mom couldn’t help herself! She really could care less what everyone thought.
Well I just don’t care what people on the Isle will think. I’m pretty sure I’m in love with this human. There is no doubt in my heart about how I feel. I know everything about him. In my head he was just a memory. But right now... right now he is as real as I am. He is alive despite his suicidal thoughts.
He sniffs and I snap out of the trance.
“I- umm. Sorry I had to use the bathroom-”
“My room isn’t a bathroom.” He says to me. He speaks again. His voice is so dreamy. I’m a little irked though. I sense a little hostility underlying his words. I narrow my eyes. I’m no ones punching bag. I get up off the rug and cross my arms.
“Yes well you were in there crying and I sure as hell wasn’t going to stand in the hallway and wait for you to get out.” I say to him with determination. “Talk about awkward.” I whisper.
His eyes bulge out. He shifts around uncomfortably. “Who are you?”
“I’m Kelly. I’m Delia’s niece.”
“Uhh Delia? That short lady with the big boob- I mean uhh she has really long black hair?”
“Yes to the height, big boobs and the hair.”
“Oh. How long are you visiting?”
“I’m not visiting. I live with Delia. I’m suppose to be going onto my senior year here in the high school then off to college.”
“Same. um not with the whole living with Delia thing-”
“No. I get it. um.. I’ll go to the bathroom. Sorry about being in your room-”
“Don’t sweat it.”
“I don’t think I caught your name.”
“I’m Ethan. Ethan Grant.”
“Nice meeting you Ethan. See you around.”
“Yeah. Same to you.”
“One quick moment Ethan." I take a breathe and talk. “Things happen for a reason. I know i’m a complete stranger but sometimes it helps to talk to strangers. I’m not a gossiper or anything. I dont have a PhD in psychology. But I lost my dad a few years back and speaking to a stranger is a lot better then speaking to a shrink who can’t even relate. They’ll put a diagnosis on how you feel you know. They’ll give you pills up the kazoo. No one can put a diagnosis on you like that though. You aren’t sick. You lost someone dear to you. Anyway. I guess i’m saying that you shouldn’t hesitate to come around my way. I’m not judgmental person or... okay now i’m just babbling. I’m sorry. i’ll shut up and let you sleep. bye Ethan.”
