Nadia sat uncomfortably in the carriage. The two horses which pulled the cart kept moving causing Nadia, Anka and Deyan to knock into each-other. Nadia was the only conscious one while the other two were still in a deep sleep. Ideas rapidly rushed through Nadia's head of ways she could explain this situation. They have the wrong person maybe? Or perhaps we are being kidnapped? But, she knew in her heart that they deserved the truth. After Marin's death, Nadia had more fear for Hristo than ever. There was nothing he wasn't capable of, no lines he wouldn't cross. Watching her sleeping family, Nadia felt like the most disgusting person to ever live. The more she hated Hristo for Marin's death the more she realised it was her fault. She had started to work for Hristo. She had killed and killed and killed. She was her father's true killer.
Suddenly, she heard Deyan coughing. Sitting up straighter, she flattened her dress and starting panting uncontrollably. This was it. Steadily, Deyan opened his dark eyes.
"Nadia you're ok." Deyan said with a small smile. Her heart sunk. How could she do this? How could she tell him that Marin was dead and that she was an assassin?
"Yes, Deyan I'm fine. Are you hurt?" Nadia said reaching out her hand to touch his tiny, skinny knee.
"Why are they doing this Nadia? Who are they and what do they want?" Deyan said through a rough cough. Nadia couldn't even reply and to this, Deyan squinted his eyes. "Nadia what aren't you telling me? You can tell me Nadia, you know that." She took a deep breath.
"Deyan you have to know that I only did what I did because I love you, all of you." She said and Deyan nodded. "Just under a year ago, when you were sick, a man named Hristo came to me and asked me to do some jobs for him. He promised to give me a good amount of money, enough to keep all of you safe and alive. You know how much I love all of you so instantly I agreed, as you would expect, but Deyan the jobs I accepted to do were not normal jobs. He wanted me to do terrible, awful things. He wanted me to kill people. I don't know why I ever accepted but now I look at you and you're so...alive and I can't help but think that I did the right thing. If I hadn't done those things you would be dead and I couldn't live with that! What I have done is bad, very bad but you're ok!" Nadia finished and she dragged her eyes from her hands to Deyan's face. He was crying.
"Why? I don't understand! You are such a good person, but good people don't kill!"
"Deyan please don't hate me for what I have done! Please I can't live with you hating me!" Nadia said again her eyes brimming with tears.
"I don't hate you Nadia, I could never hate you. You are my sister, my own flesh and blood and that means something! But Nadia, you should have known that father, mother or I would not have wanted you to do this, we never would have wanted this. Because of what you have done I have to feel as if I am responsible for all those people's deaths! They are all dead Nadia, if I had died sooner they would not be. Just my life ending would have saved so many others!" Deyan said and Nadia shook her head hard.
"Deyan no! I only did what I did to keep you safe!'" Nadia said and suddenly, out of the corner of her eyes she saw Anka sit up with angry, blood shot eyes.
"And look how well you have done that! Nadia we are sitting in a dangerous man's carriage! God knows where your father is!" Anka said furiously and seeing the change in Nadia's expression when she mentioned Marin she began to cry softly. "Where is Marin, Nadia?"
The carriage stopped suddenly before Nadia had a chance to answer. Deyan looked frantically around the carriage, terrified until his eyes darted to the door which he could hear being quickly unlocked. The door swung open showing Hristo standing outside looking as happy and cocky as ever.
"Isn't that the question on everybody's lips? Nadia don't tell them, you can explain it to them once we are inside." Hristo said cruelly. Nadia glared at him then turned to her family. Anka and Deyan were both looking completely devastated and confused but most of all, furious. Hristo just laughed.
"Well this is going to be interesting."
