Just about thirty minutes into a three hour journey home Luke had already fallen asleep. I put my tray table down and pulled out my laptop and picked up where I left off on my book:
"I know somewhere" Elizabeth noted to the group "As of what" Megan asked "As in somewhere that's not on the grid" Elizabeth smiled "Then let's go" Megan barked.
They gathered their things and head out to the two cars in front of Elizabeth's house. "Okay everything in the car" Ramon said slamming the back trunk. "Okay Kevin give me the keys" Elizabeth held out her hand "Yeah you're not driving my car" Kevin chuckled "Yes I am I'm the only one that know's where this place is", "Well tough luck sister, you are a god awful driver" Kevin pointed out "Am not", "Are so" everyone else chimed in.
After a long argument and some negotiating Elizabeth ended up driving Kevin's car, by herself.
I typed for about an hour or so until Luke woke up. He stretched his arms in front of him and turned to me. "How long have I been asleep?" He asked "About and hour and a half" I kissed him on the cheek. He smiled and grabbed my hand that was on the tray table and brought it to his lap.
I closed the window on my laptop that had my book on it and slid in a movie. We put our headphone in and watched one of Luke's favorite movies which was Hocus Pocus. I laid my head on his shoulder and felt my eyes slowly get heavier as the last thing I felt was his lips pressed on my forehead.
I was awaken by the caption over the speaker announcing that we are landing in ten minutes. We grabbed our things and got off the plane as soon as it landed, flagged down a cab and headed home.
"Oh god it's hot in here" I announced walking into the house "Eww it is" Luke said closing the door behind him. He walked over to the thermostat and turned on the air, letting a cool blast of air spread throughout the house.
"Why do we have seven messages on our answering machine" I asked walking into the kitchen "No clue, we don't have any friends so.." Luke trailed off as he walked up the steps putting our bags in the bedroom.
I listened to the messages as I grabbed the tea kettle off the stove and filled it with hot water. Four of which from my sister, two from Brittany and one from my dad.
"Who called" Luke asked walking into the kitchen "Shushh" I sounded trying to hear the last message. "Hey honey it's dad, I know you're in New York right now but I got some bad news." he paused "You're Uncle James, he passed away this morning, he was in the hospital with chest pain and he ended up having a heart attack and died almost instantly, I know you weren't close to him but I would like to see you here in one month for the funeral, call me when you can, love you" the message was then followed by two beep's.
Luke and I both stood in silence as we stared at the answering machine. Luke then looked up at me "Did we hear that right", "I guess so" I managed to bring out of me. I just stared at the answering phone then picked it up and started dialing, "Hey dad" I greeted as I walked out the back door and onto the beach.
That night I laid in bed staring at the white smooth ceiling, having to fan run across it at a low speed. "Are you okay" Luke asked rolling over "What made you ask that" I let out a small chuckle "Well it's two in the morning and you're still awake", "I'm fine". "I didn't know him that well, it's not like he was always in my life, but-" Luke cut me off and finished my sentence "he was family".
I turned to Luke and placed my hand on the side of his face cupping his ear, "I'll be fine" I re-assured then placing a kiss onto his lips. I felt a smile grow on his face as he turned back on his side a soon fell asleep.
