For the next few days Jasper avoids me. I can't tell if he's embarrassed, upset or annoyed. He's harder to read than a brick wall. If I'm downstairs with Emily, he's up in his room. If I'm outside, he'll be hiding in his office. He only speaks to Stefan, his mother and his father. I've pressed them all for information and they've all adamantly said no. The only sliver of information I got was from Emily, who had pushed it out of Stefan, who said he's been planning a big surprise.

Emily bursts into my room,

"Get up! Get up!" She shouts, grinning at my shocked face. "You need to get dressed, missy" She says, pointing a joking finger at me

"Why..?" I groan, rolling off my bed and standing up

"Well, I'm not supposed to tell you..." she said, leaning in to whisper in my ear, "But, Jasper's surprise is tonight!" She pulls back with a gleeful smile plastered on her face.

"Oh." I look down, unsure what to think.

"So. We need to get you dressed." She said, already in the closet and pulling out dresses, "How about this?" She holds a lacy black dress. I stare at the figure hugging material and the thigh-high hem

"Emily?! Have you lost your mind!?" I exclaim, she chuckles and puts it back. She continues the routine of bringing out dresses and putting them back, each being worst than the last, until she reveals a pastel blue, long dress with a slit down the side. Intricate lace detailing along the neck line and shimmering jewels formed a beautiful shape along the chest. "Your eyes say it all! This is the one!" She grins. I slip it on and it fits like a glove. She stands behind me as we both look at my reflection in the full-length mirror. Emily matches it with silver stiletto heels and a simple jewelled hair clip. It looks absolutely beautiful!

Emily leads me down the stairs, her hand over my eyes. A strong scent of vanilla and nutmeg fills my nose. When we reach the bottom of the stairs Emily takes her hand off my eyes and I stare at the set-up Jasper has created. Red rose petals lead up to a smiling Jasper, wearing a tuxedo, who holds a bouquet of yellow roses. I smiled - he remembered. The only light in the room is a selection of candles organised on the table next to where he stands. I walk over to him, doing surprisingly well in heels.

"You look... wow." He stutters, looking me up and down. I smile, "Come." He gestures, holding out his hand and I take it; it feels rough and used in mine. He guides me into the dining room and I take in the small section of the table that's adorned with candles. We walk over and take our seats. He looks at me as he reveals the food under the metallic cover - Pizza! I chuckle. The memories of that night still shadowed the memory, but the gesture is still admirable.

"This is quite something" I smile

"Thank you." He says, taking a little bow - making me chuckle. "Look, we have something to talk about..." He trails off. I nod, understanding what he means, "He was called Casey. Casey Montgomery."

"I recognise that name. He's the Alpha before you." I note

"Yes." He sighs, "I think it's time you know the full story." He takes a deep breath. "Two years ago, Casey betrayed me. His sister had been taken by hunters when she was outside our pack territory, and he struck a deal. Me for her. Casey adored Sandy - she meant the world to him - and he would do anything to get her back. He traded me for her, handing me over to the hunters. He organised an ambush, tricking me into going on a round outside our territory. They kidnapped me. They torture you, testing their wolfs bane and their silver against you. Testing how strong it is until it kills you." I notice he uses third person when he described the hunters, Peter taught me it was a way of disassociating with the events - a coping strategy. "I befriended one of the hunters - against all odds - and he let me escape. I was weak. Tired. I couldn't fight, so I stayed at the nearest hotel before coming back to our territory. When I got here, Casey put up a sad act - convincing me he that he didn't do anything wrong. I told him everything, we were very close to him, all about the hunter that helped me - Caleb. The next week Caleb's body turned up right outside the pack house. Casey's scent was all over him, I could tell he was the one that killed him. I confronted Casey and he admitted that he was the one that set up the ambush, he thought no one would believe me over him. But I convinced my family and they convinced their friends and soon the whole pack - bar Casey, his beta, his dad and his two brothers - were open to fighting for me. I didn't want it to end up in fight but Casey was arrogant. He thought 5 people could face a whole pack. His father, brothers and beta all died, he was seriously injured but - as you know - survived. The vow I almost finished; the vow he said. He surrendered his title to me in return for his survival. My wolf evolved - grew larger, developed abilities. I'd opened up to Casey and he'd betrayed me. I've been afraid to open up to anyone since. Your my mate - you deserve me being honest. I don't want to be the cold, heartless Alpha. I want you."
His story was heart-breaking. The history behind his title was truly sad. I look at him but he avoids my gaze. His eyes gloss over and I can see the tears forming.

"I-I'm sorry" I croak, reaching out my hand to hold his. He pulls back at the touch,

"I'm not finished." I stare at him - there's more? "Your pack. Do you know who attacked them?"

"No... I left before I found out." I answer unsure

"It was Casey. He ordered the attack. And... and I didn't stop him." He looks down. I'm speechless for a moment. Devastated at the news... before I come to my senses

"It wasn't your fault. You weren't his beta, you weren't him. It was his decision. You couldn't change it." I comfort. He looks at me and gives me a small smile. I return it.

Finally it looked like we were making progress
