I watched my mother comforting Mya as she held her tear-streaked face in her hands. The front door creaked open and Emily trod up the stairs - Stefan following in suit. Emily came into the bedroom and sat with Mara and Mya on the bed, offering comforting words and soothing her. I turned to Stefan and looked at his tired eyes,

"Sorry to call you in again." I murmured,

"It's okay, Jasper." He pats my arm, "What happened?" He nodded towards Mya. I sighed, I didn't really know what had happened... Mya seemed shaken and scared and I didn't really push for information.

"All I know is this creature" I shivered unintentionally, "had red eyes and was black. And fast enough to get away before I saw it." Stefan's eyes gazed unchangingly as I spoke. He sighed,

"I'll stay here if you want, but I can't guarantee I'll be much help, running on 2 hours sleep - even you couldn't pull that off." He chuckled awkwardly,

"It's okay, I just thought you should know, tell the wolves on patrol tonight. I've phoned my father - him and my mother are staying in the other guest room tonight." I gave him a pat on the arm and he nodded. He pulled away and I watched as he disappeared out into the night.

---

I lay awake, staring at the ceiling and feeling Mya turn and groan in her sleep. Her arms flung on top of the duvet and pulled herself up. I tilted my head slightly and watched her, she saw me watching her and shifted down into my arms,

"Couldn't sleep?" She asked,

"Yep, and I'm guessing you had a bad dream?" I replied

"Uhuh." She mumbled, "It's just... that thing..." She trailed off. I nodded against her shoulder and pulled her even further down into the sheets. I pressed my lips against her forehead which was damp with cold sweat. I could feel her smiling against my cheek as her warm breath warmed the otherwise cold night. I reached my arms around her and pressed her body against mine, she giggled.

"Bit excited are we?" She chuckled and pointed down - as well as she could in the confined space between our two bodies. I laughed and loosened my grip. I found my hand travelling down to her stomach, a small bump had emerged by now. I leaned down to her ear and whispered,

"Ultra-scan tomorrow!" And she squealed with excitement. She snuggled her head into my arms and I stayed awake. Her breath was even and smooth, warm against my bare chest. I played with her hair as she slept and the time ticked by until the signs of early morning reflected into the room, illuminating the exquisite paintings and the pale walls. I moved slowly, trying not to wake Mya up, and tip-toed my way down the stairs, stretching over the few I knew would creak. I walked into the kitchen, the cold stone floor was harsh against my bare feet. I took the kettle and began brewing it before making a pot of coffee. Taking the mug I had made I turned and walked back to the room. I place the mug on the side and pull out a washed-out grey top and some plain black jeans. By the time I had turned back around - fully dressed - Mya had woken up and was sipping my coffee, a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. I mock scowl and she puts the empty mug back on the table. She returned my scowl before breaking into a smile; I couldn't help but smile alongside her.

"I'll go and get you - and me - another cup of coffee. Get dressed, we're going to the pack doctor at 9." I smiled as I walked out the door.

---

The pack doctor was late. I glanced at my watch - it read 8:58 - I would have expected her here by now. The door swung open and my mother walked in, followed by a small women carrying a large brief case. A look of shock and confusion danced across her face before she returned it to a mature, formal look.
