The early morning sun shone bright and new down on Arcadia Bay as Max, patient as she was, stood waiting at Kate's house. She had managed to get Max to promise to walk with her to school. There was about a mile between their houses.
She recalled what had happened two days before, as she had visited Kate at the hospital. They had talked a lot when Kate had teased her so much she had actually thought Kate had meant every word. She had explained she was just joking afterwards, and Kate persuaded the nurse for tea, she really had some hidden sides to her that Max didn't know. They made impersonations, which they later had to guess with peaceful penalties... It had all been so wondrous, but she had thought the time just sped up, making an entire day with Kate feel like minutes.
A familiar voice interrupted Max' stream of thoughts.Kate: "You waited for me! Thank you so much."
Kate hugged Max as if she was about to lose her, Max felt revived from the early morning tiredness, suddenly feeling way too happy. Exhaustion seemed only to exist when Kate wasn't around.
Max: "Ofc I waited for you, you even made me promise it"
Kate: Yea, I owe you one."
They went down the road towards the little bus stop, Kate was looking nothing less than amazing, her hair was placed carefully in a tight bun, her semi warm jacket fit perfectly, her beautiful features made her seem as if she beamed. They made it to the stop and sat. Kate couldn't sit still, she was fidgeting with her ring taking it on and off. It was quite freezing, but Max had an idea something else was in play.
Max: "Who gave you that? It's beautiful."
Kate: "My dad gave me this as a present..... Every time I look at it, I feel like this is a sign of my Dad, that shows he loves me."
She started calming down, she had an amazing posture. Not even the cold morning could ruin that. She was proud of her father. A warm smile found its way to Kate's lips. Max sensed her chest heating up like a lightbulb.
Max: "I never really understood how close you were. I mean, I know that he loves you, but I have never seen or talked to him, how is your father?"Kate: "He is so caring and sweet. And he never gets angry. I only saw him get angry once when my Mom yelled at me for..for breaking a glass."
The eyes of Kate's were locked on to Max', and she felt Kate was on the edge of crying. But before anything happened the bus appeared, making Kate sigh and stand up. They got on the bus, paid with a travelling card, and continued onwards to Arcadia Bay High school.
Max: "This is gonna be great, I can't wait to see our teachers, It's a fairly new school, so it has to have a great style don't you think?"
Kate: "Well, yea I bet it's all new and flashy, I wonder if the food in the cafeteria is eatable though."
The 15-minute ride felt short due to talking, and while Kate and Max roamed through the school getting impressed every so often. Kate began questioning the sanity of enrolling in such a new and overwhelmingly big college. When they finally had embodied the entire school Kate wanted to ask Max something.
Kate: "Max is this even a good idea? What if people are mean like..and the teacher, imagine if the tea.."
Max. "Kate, look at me, don't let it get to you. I will always be here for you, and if you get sad or lonely just think of how beautiful and amazing you are."
Kate had started hyperventilating and panicking, but Max's words comforted her it seemed. She gradually got the better of her breath, along with a mild expression. Max instantly noticed her heart race again. "omg, again now"
Kate: "You're really my guardian angel, I feel so light and alive when you're with me. I feel better, let's go to class"
As Max looked down the hall, she sensed something at her hand, and just then she figured out Kate was holding her hand. She didn't seem to be bothered by it at all. The butterflies were definitely there. No denying that. Her entire body perceived this feeling, each and every nerve was getting pulled towards her friend.
Lastly, they made it to the classroom, where they quickly gazed the room, Kate wanted to sit with Max, which was no problem at the moment. Kate found a good spot in the in the middle all the way to the left. Only four other, presumably classmates, had made their way to the classroom. Kate and Max had chatted for about 10 minutes when the remaining students and teacher had arrived. The instant the teacher walked into the classroom, and announced the beginning of the lesson, Kate immediately looked at Max, she could see how nervous she was, how tense and uneasy she became. Max quickly held her hand, a bit hesitant at first, but when Kate held it tight and entwined her fingers indicating she needed it, she helt fast . They looked each other in the eyes for a second then turned their heads towards the teacher in unison.
