Big logs of oak tree formed the foundation of the house. They were thick as pillars in a temple and Kate felt safe there, despite the fact she had never been there before. Items like trinkets she had never imagined existed, hung down from the ceiling, making her wonder how one would ever reach them. The shut door behind her was massive and old, and yet she didn't doubt it would never rot or fall apart. She breathed hard and noticed the air felt different as well as the interior of the house. Every single element was ancient in some way, but working without excuse. The house seemed to keep rising in the subtle light from a big chandelier, giving the room a crystal look.
Mr. Finrick cleared a big table in the far corner and placed Max's lifeless body down. He scouted toward a door to his left and walking in came a middle-aged woman. She wore a shirt and tight jeans, brushing a strain of grey hair behind the ear, she shot her gaze at Mr. Finrick who mumbled something and looked at Kate. The woman then looked at Kate and then Max.
"Rick! Just what do you think you're doing dragging people into my house unannounced?"
She gave Mr. Finrick yet another look this time annoyed and bitter. Mr. Finrick closed the distance between them and spoke so Kate couldn't hear. The woman didn't seem convinced whatever Mr. Finrick was telling her, and they kept talking as if Kate wasn't even there.
"QUIT TALKING!!! Please. She will die if you just stand around arguing all day. We don't have time..."
Kate snapped, staying quiet for so long had made her irritable and impatient. To think she could lose Max to something so trivial, she wouldn't allow it. They had stopped now, and the woman went over to Kate and looked her in the eye.
"My name is Christin and I will help you. But I will need something in return, we will figure out the details later."
Her solid boots banged when she walked across the room. Seeing her so close, Kate felt weird staring at her. Christin's features were strong and clear. At the same time, Christin's face became blurry in her memory when she turned away. It was almost vibrating.
Christin looked closely at Max, she pulled her t-shirt up to reveal her stomach. Then with a hymn and closed eyes, Christin pressed down with three fingers. Mr. Finrick closed his eyes too. Kate went closer to see what they were doing and Kate was beginning to think perhaps Max wasn't the only one to use a weird power.
"Jeez, what is this? Something is blocking my sight. But she is definitely at the verge of death. Rick go get my glasses and Kate if she wakes up you gotta keep her conscious. It's important. I can't talk while working, so you gotta do this."
Mr. Finrick hurried out of the room and Kate took Max's hand and nodded. She still didn't move, to think she might be conscious again make her happy. She clenched her hand.
Christin continued hymning and pressing her fingers against Max's stomach. She now drew circles and kept repeating the tones. Mr. Finrick came back with a pair of black glasses, and she put them on and started to write with two fingers. Small curvy signs, began to light up on her stomach. She kept writing, fastly and without pause. Her hymn had changed to nonsensical words.
"She is stable for now. Whatever is draining her is constantly draining the exact same amount. This curse is powerful. There are no flaws in it. I can't undo it. She will wake up in a moment. As long as she is conscious it will be dormant"
The lit signs had vanished, but five lights from every fingertip of her right hand were still glowing.
"She has a power that can reverse time, and she used it to save me, we think it might try to reverse back again somehow."
