Kate was explaining what had happened the other day to the teacher, Mr. Finrick, without mentioning the intimate moment between the two, in Max's dorm room, as Max was still in a bad condition.
"I think, she just needs some time to rest. I will go grab some medicine and then I think she just needs to lay low until she is better"
"But this isn't just a fever, fevers do not attack this sudden and with such a big impact. She went from fine to sick in seconds!"
She couldn't believe it. Why wasn't he listening? Max was not feverish. She was coughing so bad Kate had to bring water non-stop, just to ease the throat pain.
Also, thinking about what Max had said about the power and the side effect regarding time interference, Kate was dreading this was a sign of the power trying to fix what Max had done to save her. A life for a life, the same exact thing had happened to Chloé. Deep in thoughts, Max's voice nearly didn't reach her but Kate reacted when she was was trying to sit up, with the small amount of energy she had left."Don't.*cough. look so sincere, you make me feel even worse..*cough-*cough. for having a fever"
Max really felt terrible. She couldn't remember feeling weak and tired like this before. But she wasn't too concerned about it, she would be fine as long as she didn't move too much. The fact, Kate was so worried about it made Max truly happy, if not for the million tons of weight pinning down her body to the bed and feeling of burning up from inside, she would have hugged her so tight.
"Jeez, Why are you smiling about this? I can't lose you, don't you see Max?"
Max turned over a bit, so she could look Kate in the eyes and made the best effort not to cough or look too sick.
"I just need some medicine...Kate look, you don't have to worry so much, I won't leave. It's not like I'm going to die of fever."
She tried rolling her eyes but in doing so, she nearly fell out of the bed. Only Kate's firm hand stopped it.
"Because you saved me, your power is trying to balance out what you did, you told me so yourself."
Kate held Max's stare until Max's gave in and looked down, she said nothing.
"You might be dying in my place."
Kate felt the tears rise, nothing could change it, if this is what is happening. She wanted to help so bad but she was worthless, she couldn't do anything to help her.
"We still don't know if that's the case if we are lucky maybe it really is just a fever."
But Max didn't believe it to be true, she had noticed it when she woke up this morning and felt worse. She kept getting worse and worse even to this moment, she didn't feel any better. She looked up at Kate again. This time she couldn't hide her pain. But even if she died, she didn't regret saving Kate that day on the roof. Max's recalled the same exact expression on Kate's face when she was about to jump. Remembering her sad and painful expression tore her to pieces. Tears rolled down her face.
"I just really wanted to you to stay with me. I know it was selfish of me but I wanted you to never feel sad or hurt again. But I ended up hurting you even more, I never wanted this. Kate, please don't be so sad about this, this isn't your fault."
There was no stopping the tears now, Kate's eyes were puffed and her jaw trembled. Speaking with a teary voice with her forehead pressed on Max's, Kate huddled near Max.
