Prologue
"Daddy!" My eyes shot open instantly the white ceiling came into view. I looked over at my alarm clock to see it was only eight in the morning, and it was Saturday. "Daddy!" I groaned in frustration as I threw the covers off my body and shot off my bed. I marched to the door and flung it open to see Katy in the middle of the hallway. "Daddy!" She screamed again.
"Katy, shut up!" I screamed. Her head snapped to me.
"What?"
"I'm trying to sleep!"
Just then the door down the hallway opened and out came Dad. I groaned as I stomped over to him.
"Dad, can you please tell her to stop yelling I've been up since two in the morning studying and I need to sleep." I told him.
"Guess what today is?" He said completely ignoring my complaint, while he smiled down at me. I just shrugged. "It's your birthday!" He cheered as he picked me up and spun me around.
A smile appeared on my face as he put me down. "Thanks" I said
"Happy birthday, Lia." Katy said
"Thanks" I crouched down as I hugged her.
"Come on, there's a surprise waiting for you downstairs." Dad smiled as he led me downstairs.
As soon as we got to the bottom of the stairs he placed his hands over my eyes. "Keep walking" He said. He helped me walk and soon we were in the kitchen. "When I pull away, Do. Not. Look." I nodded.
I felt his hands pull away from my eyes, but I kept them closed. I heard a couple footsteps move a little and then.. "Open."
I slowly opened my eyes to see Dad, Daddy, Kevin and Katy all in front of me and Daddy holding a plate with chocolate chip pancakes (my all time favorite) with 'HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY LIA!' spelled out in whoop cream and a cherry on top.
"SURPRISE!" They screamed
"Thanks, guys" I said hugging them all.
Daddy placed the plate on the table in the middle of the kitchen and pulled out the chair for me to sit. I thanked him as I sat down and he pushed my chair in.
The rest sat down and ate their own pancakes, while they told me about the fun filled day they had planned for me.
I heard a sniffle on my right to see Daddy with misty eyes.
"What's up?" I asked him wondering why he was suddenly crying.
"It feels like just yesterday when you walked through the door for the first time, and now we only have a year left until you go off to college. I'm going to miss you, Teddy-Bear." He sniffled
When I was five my biological parents died in a horrific car accident, and because there was no one willing to take me in I was put in the foster system. I went through about four abusive foster homes before I came here. They had fostered me ever since. Then on my seventh birthday they asked me if I wanted them to adopt me, of course I said yes, and a year later I was officially a Thompson. Ever since then my life has been amazing, despite the fact I get bullied because of my status in school, and because of who I'm raised by.
But still, I love my family. There's Dad and Daddy. Since we can't call them both dad without confusion, we all have our different names. For Katy and Kevin it's Daddy S and Daddy J. For me Sam is Daddy and Josh is Dad.
Sam is more of the emotional, caring, always puts others feelings first, kind of guy. Josh is more of the tough, but yet always has a soft spot for Sam, and more masculine in the relationship, but I love them both equally.
Every year on the date I was officially adopted I always make them breakfast in bed. It's my way of saying how much I appreciate them always being there for me when I thought I was alone, and for all the love and nourishment they have given me ever since I came here nine years ago.
I couldn't tell you how much I love this family because there are no words to describe. Period.
"I love you, guys" I said to all of them.
"We love you, too Lia." They said
I had to admit, even though it didn't start out great, I had an amazing life ahead of me.
Little did I know that once I got older things would get complicated.
