"So what happened to your biological parents?" Shane asked as I sat in one of the swings, while he stood at the bars of the swing set.
We were at the park about five minutes away from my house with both our brother and sister. I had asked Kevin and Katy if they wanted to come after Shane said it was a good idea, and they said yes.
I sighed. "When I was five they were in a car accident. I was at home with the babysitter." I answered with a low tone.
"Why didn't you go live with other family members when they died?"
"Most of them were dead, and the ones that weren't, were not willing to take me in. My mom and dad's parents weren't in contact with us. My parents got pregnant with me at sixteen and their parents didn't approve so they ran away together. They had me and they were an amazing mom and dad. They really loved me." My voice cracked as i felt tears begin to build in my eyes, but i held them back. "The night they died they were out on date night and we're coming home when a drunk driver ran into them. The impact was so big their car was run off a cliff. They broke through the railing and fell off. They died instantly." I felt as a tear escaped my eye as I looked down at my knees.
"I'm sorry" I heard him say.
"It's not your fault" My voice cracked. "I just miss them a lot."
"So how long have you been with Sam and Josh?"
I smiled "About nine years"
"Wow" He said smiling
"Yeah, they're the best, though." I smiled turning towards him.
We sat in a comfortable silence for a few minutes before he broke it. "So, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
"I want to be a music teacher."
"Why?"
"Because I love teaching kids something that has always taking me out of my worst moments." I looked towards the direction of the playground. "Music has always been my escape when everything was going bad. I want to teach kids what helped me through all those times." I explained. I didn't hear him say anything so I looked up to see him starring at me. "What?"
"It's the way you talk about it. About music. It's like music is your life." He says in amazement
"For the most part it is my life." I said. "So what about you?"
"What about me?" He asked in confusion.
"What do you want to be when you grow up?"
"I think I want to be a lawyer." He said
"Why?" I asked furrowed my eyebrows together.
He instantly frown and I noticed a hint of anger in his eyes. "Because there are people in this world who get away with things they shouldn't. I want to make sure those people don't get away with it." He spoke like he had some experience with someone like that, which brought my thoughts to his father.
"Hey, Shane?"
"Yeah?"
"Why don't you ever mention your father?"
I watched as his body stiffened. "Why?"
"Just wondering"
"It doesn't matter" I could hear the venom in his voice as he said those three words. I was about to say 'sorry' when the kids ran up to us.
"Can we get ice cream?" Amber asked Shane
"Yeah, come on" Shane said. I stood up from the swings and walked along them.
The walk was silent between Shane and I and I couldn't help but feel bad for bringing up his father. When we came to an ice cream stand I pulled out my money, but he stopped me.
"Don't." I looked up at Shane. "I'm paying." Then he looked down at Katy and Kevin. "What kind of ice cream do you two want?"
"Can I have vanilla with rainbow sprinkles?" Katy asked him
"Sure, what about you Kevin?"
"Chocolate and vanilla swirl with chocolate sprinkles." He said
Then he looked at me. "What would you like?" He asked
"No, I'm okay" I said waving my hand off.
"If you don't tell me I'm just going to order something for you" He said playfully
"Vanilla" I said
"Okay"
He ordered all six orders and we waited for them to come. When we had our ice cream, Shane and I sat at one bench while the others played at the play set at the ice cream shop.
"I'm sorry" He said out of the blue.
I turned towards him and frown confused. "For what?" I asked
He sighed as he had a guilty look on his face. "I was harsh when we talked earlier and I shouldn't have."
"It's okay, it's clear you don't like talking about it." I said giving him a smile.
"Thanks" He said. He tried to smile, but just couldn't do it.
"For what?" I looked at him confused
"Understanding." He said
"Well, then you're welcome." I gave him a smile.
"I was wondering if you had any free periods at school?" He said
I nodded "Other than lunch I have fourth right after my lunch and sixth." I said "You?"
"Actually the same. You want to maybe hang out?" He asked
"I'd love to"
"Great"
I looked at him and smiled "Great"
